변동(變動)하는 사회에서 한 직업에서 평생을 일한다는 게 쉽기 않다. 그 중 글을 쓰는 기자(記者), 또는 작가(作家)로 산다는 것도 쉬운 일이 아니다. 필자는 변화-변동하는 세상에서 기자로 51년을 보냈다. 그 간의 소회(所懷=마음에 품고 있는 회포)를 정리해봤다.
1.나는 자유-민주주의 신봉자였다.=나는 미국식 자유-민주주의 신봉자였다. 언론사 경영과 집필활동을 통해 자유와 민주주의 확장에 헌신했다고 자부한다. 공산주의를 옹호하는 글을 쓰거나 북한 체제를 칭찬하는 글을 써본 적이 없다.

2.나는 군사정부-독재정부를 극렬하게 비판해온 저널리스트였다.=나는 박정희-전두환 등 군사-독재체제를 두둔하거나 옹호하지 않았다. 극렬한 반정부 기자였다. 특히 미국생활 5년(1985-1989) 기간에는 전두환 독재정권을 연일 비판하는 기사를 썼었다. 필자가 오너였던 주간신문인 '주간현대' 한 호의 전 페이지를 광주학살 내용으로 메꾸기도 했다.
3.나는 언론계의 비주류 오너(사주)로서 언론 매체를 통해 정론을 이끌었다.=1973년 군에 입대, 정훈병(政訓兵)으로 기자 인생이 시작됐다. 그러하니 2024년까지, 51년 간 언론계에 종사해왔다. 그 사이에 주간신문인 토요신문-일요서울의 편집국장을 지냈다. 1997년 주간신문인 '주간현대'를 창간, 매체의 오너(사주)가 됐다. 그 후 발행된, 사건의 내막(주간신문), 브레이크뉴스(인터넷신문)의 발행인(오너)으로 종사했다. 그러하니 언론계의 주류가 아닌, 비주류로 일관한 셈이다. 그러면서 중도주의 노선을 걸었다. 늘 약자의 편이었다.
정치적인 노선은 김대중(DJ) 노선의 추종자였다. 전남출신으로, 미력이나마 언론을 통해, 한국 민주주의 발전에 기여했음을 영광으로 삼는다. 김대중 전 대통령의 최다 인터뷰어임을 자랑스럽게 생각한다.

4.나의 시대에 한국이 압축성장, 선진국형 국가로 진입했다. 나는 매체오너로서 성장하는 한국을 기록한 기록자였다.=운이 좋게, 나의 시대에 한국이 압축-고속성장 했다. 51년 언론인으로 살았고, 그런 연유로 성장하는 한국을 기록하는 기록자 위치에 있었다. 필자가 오너인 '주간현대'는 지령 1249호, '사건의 내막'은 지령 1207호(2024년 5월 26일 현재)나 발행됐다.
