브레이크뉴스 노보림 기자= 작품은 작가를 닮는다는 말이 있다. 어찌보면 창작자의 생각이나 작업 환경은 그대로 작품에 투영될 수 밖에 없다. 때문에 작품을 들여다 보기 이전에, 작가를 먼저 들여다 보면 그 작품을 보다 잘 이해할 수 있다. 이에 브레이크뉴스는 국내 작가들과의 릴레이 인터뷰를 통해 작가의 작품은 물론, 삶의 이야기를 들어보는 시간을 가지려고 한다. <편집자 주>
- 작품을 그릴 때 주로 어디에서 영감을 받나.
주로 반려견과의 소소한 일상에서 영감을 얻는다. 반려견의 일상은 인간의 일상보다 한정적이기에 얼핏 단순하게 느껴질 수 있지만, 오히려 그래서 몸짓 하나하나 더욱 면밀한 관찰과 풍부한 상상의 대상이 된다. 그와 산책할 때나 그가 잠을 잘 때 그의 시선과 동작에 집중하다 보면 이전에는 보지 못했던 것도 유심히 보게 되고, 느끼지 못했던 감정들도 느끼게 된다. 그런 것들을 그림으로 표현하려고 노력하고 있다. 예를 들면, 이전에는 무심하게 지나쳤던 길가의 클로버나 민들레 등을 그림의 주요 배경으로 삼고 있다.
- 독자들에게 자신의 작품 2~3점 소개해 달라.

<봄을 기다려요>는 우리 집 반려견이 유기견 보호소에서 처음 집에 온 날, 잔뜩 움츠러들어 있는 모습에서 영감을 얻었다. 춥고 힘든 겨울 같은 날을 지나 봄을 기다리는 이들의 마음을 응원하고 싶었다.

<Dance in the Green>은 프랑스 화가 앙리 마티스의 그림, <춤(Dance) II>의 오마주이다. 평소 꾸밈없이 기쁨의 감정을 표현하는 반려견의 몸짓이 마치 춤을 추는 것과 같다고 느꼈는데, 거기에 화답하듯 나도 같이 춤을 추며 서로의 감정을 나눌 수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까 생각하며 그린 그림이다. 서로 손을 잡고 춤추듯이 인간과 자연 및 동물이 조화롭게 공존할 수 있기를 바라는 마음을 표현하려고 했다.

마지막으로, <한낮의 산책>에서는 매일 반려견과의 산책에서 느끼는 행복한 동행의 감정을 그려내고 싶었다.
- 왜 작가로서의 삶을 선택했나.
어렸을 때부터 그림 그리는 것이 좋아서, 학창 시절에도 미술 과제만큼은 밤이 새도록 열심히 했던 것 같다. 여러 사정상 그림을 전공하지는 못했지만, 언젠가 꼭 그림을 그리고 싶다는 생각을 항상 갖고 있었다. 늦은 나이에 그림을 배우기 시작해서 작가가 되겠다는 생각은 전혀 못 했는데, 엄마의 그림을 보면 왠지 기분이 좋아진다며 ‘작가가 돼서 엄마의 그림을 그려보라’는 딸의 말에 용기를 내 보았다.
-작가로 활동하며 가장 힘들었던 순간이 있다면 언제였나.
첫 개인전을 준비할 때가 가장 힘들었던 것 같다. 준비 과정에서 실질적인 어려움도 있었지만, 그보다 전시의 내용과 방향성 등을 설정하고 수정하는 일이 쉽지 않다고 느꼈다. 전시뿐 아니라, 제 그림 자체의 방향과 정체성에 대해 끝없이 고민해야 함을 무겁게 느낀 순간이었다.
- 반대로 가장 행복했던 순간은?
아이러니하게도 힘들었던 만큼 첫 개인전을 할 때가 너무 행복했다. 부족한 점도 많았지만, 해냈다는 안도감과 뿌듯함으로 가슴 벅찼던 것 같다.
- 앞으로의 전시 계획은?
내년에 개인전을 하나 준비하고 있다. 그래서 나의 반려견을 넘어서, 많은 강아지의 ‘사소한 모험’을 그리고 있다. ‘사소하다’와 ‘모험’은 어쩌면 서로 어울리지 않는 개념이지만, 사람이 일상적으로 할 수 있는 것을 강아지가 한다면 엄청난 도전이나 모험이 되지 않을까?

Therefore, before looking at the work, if you look at the author first, you can understand the work better. Accordingly, Break News plans to conduct relay interviews with domestic writers to listen to their stories as well as their works and lives. <Editor's note>
- Where do you usually get inspiration when drawing your work?
I mainly get inspiration from small daily life with my dog. A dog's daily life may seem simple at first glance because it is more limited than that of a human, but in fact, each gesture becomes the subject of closer observation and rich imagination. When you walk with him or when he sleeps, if you focus on his gaze and movements, you will see things you didn't see before and feel emotions you didn't feel before. I'm trying to express those things through pictures. For example, roadside clovers and dandelions, which were previously overlooked, are used as the main background of the painting.
- Please introduce 2-3 pieces of your work to readers.
I would like to introduce <Waiting for Spring>, <Dance in the Green>, and <A Midday Walk>.
<Waiting for Spring> was inspired by the sight of my dog cowering on the first day he came home from the abandoned dog shelter. I wanted to cheer on the hearts of those waiting for spring after the cold and difficult days of winter.
<Dance in the Green> is an homage to French painter Henri Matisse's painting, <Dance II>. I felt that my dog's gestures, which express emotions of joy without any embellishment, were like dancing, and I drew this picture thinking how great it would be if I could dance together and share my feelings with each other as if responding to that. I tried to express my hope that humans, nature, and animals can coexist harmoniously by holding hands and dancing.
Lastly, in <Midday Walk>, I wanted to portray the happy feelings of companionship that I feel when I walk with my dog every day.
-Why did you choose life as a writer?
I liked drawing since I was young, and even during my school days, I worked hard all night long on art assignments. Although he was unable to major in painting due to various reasons, he always had the desire to paint someday. I started learning drawing at a late age and never thought about becoming a writer, but I took courage when my daughter said, “Look at your mother’s paintings, it somehow makes you feel good, and say, ‘Become an artist and draw your mother’s paintings.’”
-What was the most difficult moment while working as a writer?
I think the most difficult time was preparing for my first solo exhibition. There were practical difficulties during the preparation process, but more than that, I felt that setting and revising the contents and direction of the exhibition was not easy. It was a moment when I felt that I had to constantly worry about not only the exhibition, but also the direction and identity of my painting itself.
- Conversely, what was your happiest moment?
Ironically, as difficult as it was, I was very happy when I held my first solo exhibition. Although there were many shortcomings, I think I was filled with relief and pride that I accomplished it.
-What are your future exhibition plans?
I am preparing a solo exhibition next year. So, beyond my pet dog, I am depicting the ‘little adventures’ of many dogs. ‘Trivial’ and ‘adventure’ may be concepts that do not go together, but if a dog does something that humans can do on a daily basis, wouldn’t it be a huge challenge or adventure?
