누군가에게는 당연한 ‘집’으로의 귀가가 조 모 씨에게는 평생을 기다려온 기적 같은 사건이었다.
대전광역시 중구에 위치한 보문장애인자립생활센터(센터장 신인수)는 10일 오전, 시설 생활을 뒤로하고 지역사회에서 홀로서기를 시작한 조 씨의 자립 실천 축하행사를 열었다.
평생을 거주시설의 울타리 안에서 보냈던 한 남성이 마침내 자신의 이름으로 된 보금자리를 마련하고 사회의 구성원으로 첫발을 내디딘 순간이다.
조 씨의 자립은 결코 우연이 아니었다. 스스로 삶을 결정하고 책임지겠다는 강한 의지가 그를 시설 밖으로 이끌었다.
그는 2025년 4월 보문센터를 찾아 상담을 시작한 뒤, 자립생활 체험홈에 입소해 1년 동안 치열한 준비 과정을 거쳤다.
낯선 환경에 적응하며 자립에 필요한 교육과 훈련을 성실히 이행했고, 센터가 연결한 일자리를 통해 경제적 자립의 토대까지 마련했다. 비교적 짧은 체험홈 거주 기간에도 불구하고 시설 안에서부터 쌓아온 자립에 대한 기초 체력이 빠른 적응을 도왔다.
축하행사는 신인수 센터장의 응원사와 선물 전달, 그리고 조 씨의 소감 발표로 이어졌다.
조 씨는 “시설에서의 삶이 전부인 줄 알았는데, 이제는 내 집에서 미래를 꿈꿀 수 있게 되어 꿈만 같다”며 벅찬 감정을 숨기지 않았다.

신인수 센터장은 이번 자립이 많은 중중장애인 당사자들에게 긍정적인 동기부여가 되기를 희망했다.
아울러 “어려운 상황을 견디고 일궈낸 결과이기에 더욱 뜻깊다”며, 앞으로도 체험홈의 체계적인 지원과 프로그램 개발을 통해 중증장애인이 당당한 주권을 가진 시민으로 참여할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다는 의지를 분명히 했다.
보문장애인자립생활센터는 2011년 대전광역시로부터 체험홈 운영사업자로 선정된 이후 지난 14년간 총 14명의 자립 성공 사례를 배출했다.
단순한 거주 공간 제공을 넘어 장애인의 역량을 강화하고 사회적 소속감을 고취해 온 센터의 노력이 지역사회 자립생활(탈시설)의 모범적인 지표가 되고 있다.

On the morning of the 10th, the Bomun Independent Living Center (Director Shin In-soo), located in Jung-gu, Daejeon, held a celebration for Mr. Jo’s independence, marking the beginning of his journey to stand on his own in the community after leaving behind his institutional life.
