시는 10일 시청 대회의실에서 COP 유치를 위한 사전 타당성 조사 용역 중간보고회를 열고, 유치 전략의 실현 가능성과 추진 방향을 종합적으로 점검했다고 밝혔다.
이날 보고회는 이상현 관광컨벤션도시추진본부장 주재로 열렸으며, 포항시 관련 부서를 비롯해 경상북도 관계자와 외부 전문가 등 30여 명이 참석해 다양한 의견을 공유했다.
특히 5만 명 이상이 참여하는 초대형 국제회의인 COP 개최를 대비해 숙박, 교통, 보안 등 도시 전반의 수용 능력을 집중 점검하고, 미비한 인프라에 대한 보완 방안을 논의했다. 부족한 시설에 대해서는 인근 도시와의 연계 및 분산 개최 등 현실적인 대안도 검토됐다.
이와 함께 포항의 산업구조 전환을 기반으로 한 차별화 전략도 제시됐다. 수소환원제철, 이차전지 리사이클링, 블루카본 등 산업·기술·해양 자산을 활용해 ‘탄소중립 도시’ 이미지를 부각하고, COP 개최지로서의 경쟁력을 확보해야 한다는 의견이 제기됐다. 이를 통해 ‘왜 포항인가’에 대한 설득력 있는 의제와 도시 서사를 구체화할 필요성도 강조됐다.
포항시는 COP 유치를 전 부서가 참여하는 핵심 과제로 설정하고, 향후 통합 대응체계를 구축하는 한편 부서별 역할을 명확히 해 실질적인 유치 기반을 마련해 나갈 방침이다.
이상현 관광컨벤션도시추진본부장은 “이번 중간보고회는 COP 유치 전략의 구체화와 실현 가능성을 점검하는 중요한 단계”라며 “정부 정책 판단과 국제 협상에 활용될 수 있도록 완성도 높은 전략을 수립하겠다”고 말했다.
한편 포항시는 남은 용역 기간 동안 유치 시점과 개최 여건, 재원 조달 방안, 실행체계 등을 종합적으로 보완해 COP 유치를 위한 구체적인 로드맵을 마련할 계획이다.

Meanwhile, Pohang City plans to develop a concrete roadmap for the COP bid during the remaining service period by comprehensively supplementing the timing of the bid, hosting conditions, financing methods, and implementation framework.
