이에 포항시는 박물관 건립에 다양한 노력으로 지난해 포항시립박물관 건립추진 자문위원회 구성·운영하고 박물관 부지 선정, 전문 학예인력 충원, 국공립박물관 벤치마킹 등 포항시립박물관 건립을 위한 내실을 다졌다.
이러한 노력을 결과로 포항시는 지난해 11월 문화체육관광부의 공립박물관 설립 타당성 사전평가를 통과하는 쾌거를 달성하며, 시립박물관 건립에 더욱 속도를 내게 됐다.
포항시립박물관은 국·도비 등 총사업비 460억 원 들여 지하 1층, 지상 3층, 연 면적 8,240㎡ 규모로 지어진다. 5개의 전시실을 비롯해 교육체험실, 도서실, 편의 공간 등 시민 친화적인 복합문화시설로 건립될 예정이다.
건립 장소는 ‘연오랑세오녀 테마공원 내 부지’로 확정하고, 규모 1,300㎡ 이상의 수장고를 확보해 타지로 흩어져 있던 포항의 문화유산을 한곳으로 모아 포항의 정체성을 확립하고 나아가 환동해 대표 역사 문화도시로 도약한다는 방침이다.
포항시는 올해 행정안전부 지방재정 투자심사, 범시민 홍보, 유물기증운동 전개, 건축 설계 공모 등 일정을 차질 없이 수행하며, 포항의 역사와 문화적 정체성을 끌어올릴 시립박물관 건립에 매진할 계획이다.
