2024 형산강 연등문화축제는 동국대 WISE캠퍼스와 불국사, 경주불교사암연합회, 경상북도, 경주시가 신라 시대에 시작된 연등회의 맥을 잇고 불기 2568(2024)년 부처님 오신 날을 봉축하기 위해 개최한 것이다.
이번 축제는 5월 2일 저녁 5시 40분 개막 축하공연을 시작으로 개막식과 점등식, 제등행렬이 진행되고 4일까지 장엄등 전시, 다양한 체험 및 부대행사 등으로 진행되며, 26일까지 연등숲과 거리연등 전시 및 황룡사지 연등이 전시된다.
이어 연등문화축제의 백미인 제등행렬이 다채로운 볼거리와 함께 경주 시내에서 펼쳐진다.
제등행렬은 동국대 WISE캠퍼스, 불국사 신도, 경주불교사암연합회, 재학생과 경주시민 등 3천여명이 금장대 둔치를 출발하여 경주여고 삼거리, 동대 네거리, 성건주민센터 네거리, 중앙시장 네거리, 신한은행 네거리를 지나 봉황대에 도착 후 화합의 한마당으로 이어진다.
이 밖에도 연등 플로깅, 연등 페스타, 사진콘테스트, 연등 만들기, 연등 도슨트 투어 등 시민들이 참여할 수 있는 다양한 문화 체험 행사가 펼쳐진다.
형산강연등문화축제 집행위원장 철우스님(동국대 WISE캠퍼스 정각원장)은 “지혜의 등불, 행복한 세상”이라는 주제로 형산강연등문화축제를 준비했다.”며, “형산강 일대를 밝힌 지혜의 등불이 시민과 관광객들에게 마음의 평화와 건강과 행복을 기원하는 메시지로 전해지기 바란다”고 말했다.
