지난 문재인 정부 당시 폭증한 마약 관련 범죄가 여전히 위험 수위인 것으로 알려진다. 서울 한복판 소재 어느 아파트에서 집단으로 마약을 하다 추락해 사망한 경찰관 사건은 국민적 충격을 안겨주기에 부족하지 않았다. 무려 25명 넘는 인원이 동일 장소에 모여 마약파티를 하는 도무지 믿기지 않는 매우 위태로운 지경에 이르렀다.
이는 우리사회 전반에 마약이 깊숙이 침투해 있다는 하나의 예시와도 같다. 50대 가장인 배달 노동자를 숨지게 한 20대 벤츠 운전자도 마약을 투약했던 것으로 드러났다. 예전에는 유흥가 일부 등에 불과했던 마약 범죄가 이제는 대기업 직원, 가정주부 등 광범위하게 번져 있다. 특히 청소년 사이에 크게 증가한 상태여서 그 심각성은 더한다.
밀반입 수법도 지능화된 양상이다. 대형 제조물 내부에 숨겨 밀봉하거나, 액상 형태의 마약 원료를 와인병에 담아 들여온 후 필로폰으로 제조한다. 또한 밀크티 스틱에 분말형 환각성 의약품을 섞어 들여오기도 한다. 국제 소포 등 우편물을 통한 반입도 끊이지 않고 있다. 기존 검사 장비로는 검출되지 않던 신종 마약류도 늘어나는 와중이다.
무엇보다 예방과 공급 차단이 중요하다. 가정과 학교교육 현장에서 영상 등 다채로운 방법을 통해 마약의 위험성, 상담, 신고 방법 등에 대해 적극 홍보할 필요가 있다. 15~18세 사이 청소년층 마약류 사범이 급격히 증가하고 있다는 것은 두려운 현실이다. 지금 상태로 확산될 경우엔 걷잡기 어려운 국가적 재앙으로 귀결될 수 있는 까닭이다.

해외 공급책 차단을 위한 첩보 활동 강화 및 재판부의 강력한 처벌도 요구된다. 마약 제조와 유통으로 떼돈 벌 수 있다는 생각 자체를 싹둑 잘라내야 한다. 공급원이 막히게 되면 마약 값 상승으로 이어지고, 이는 수요 억제의 효과적 수단이 될 수 있다. 공동체를 파멸과 죽음으로 몰아넣는 마약 문제는 반드시 씨를 말려야 할 악질 범죄임을 유념할 일이다.
