필자는 6월 7일, 작가의 일생 일대에서 가장 중후한 기간을 히말라야 산 그림 그리기에 몽땅 바친, 강찬모 화가의 그림 전시장을 찾았다.
강찬모 화가는 1949년생이다. 지난 2004년부터 인도와 네팔에 걸쳐 있는 히말라야 산을 15번이나 찾아 나섰다고 한다. 구도자에겐 때로 계시 같은 게 있다. 그는 그런, 고귀한 계시를 받았는지도 모른다. 말하자면, 히말라야 산의 '절대적인 아름다움'에 매료돌 수 밖에 없는 그 무엇은 계기가 있었다. 그래서인지 지난 19년 간 히말라야 산만을 그리는 데 온갖 열정을 바쳤었다. 그림을 배우는 기간 이외의 아주 중요한 인생 시기에 온통 히말라야 산 그리기에 바친 셈이다. 그리하여 그는 비로소, 이제야, 히말라야 산 그림의 국제적인 작가로 우뚝 설 수 있게 됐다.

히말라야 산 그림의 전문작가인 강찬모 화가의 초대 개인전이 지난 5월 31일부터 6월 12일까지 서울 종로구 인사동길 34-1 인사아트 프라자 갤러리 1층에서 열리고 있다. 전시회 주제는 '선(Meditation)'. 이 전시회에는 국제적인 영산인 히말라야 산의 형형색색 모습 45점이 화가의 붓질로 화려하고 아름답게 재(再) 탄생했음을 한 눈에 알게 해준다.
히말라야 산 그림 가운데는 순백색의 설산(雪山)도 있고, 불타는 붉은 산도 있다. 그림 속에서는 밤하늘의 별들도, 우수수 떨어진다. 독창적인 시각으로 끝없는 순수함과 갖가지 산 형태로 우주를 표현해놓은 작품이 대다수이다.

이가연 인사아트 플라자 갤러리의 큐레이터는 '선(Meditation)-강찬모 초대전'에 대해 "강찬모 작가는 히말라야를 등반하면서 드러나는 자연 그대로의 설산 풍광을 바라보며 마치 산의 모습이 오감이 절제된 인간의 모습 같다는 느낌을 받았다고 한다. 이는 불교적 입장에서의 깨달음, 즉 출세간의 세계를 은유한다고 작가는 예기하고 있다."면서 "작품에는 주로 히말라야 산을 구현했다. 히말라야는 네팔과 인도를 가로지르며 우뚝 서 있다. 그 히말라야는 동양의 근간을 이루는 정신이 태동된 고향이자 어머니라고 현자들을 통하여 전해지고 있다."고 소개했다.
이어 "설산이 그려진 풍광은 깊은 명상으로부터 나타난 세계이다. 명상의 이미지는 그의 작품에 일관되게 암시되고 있다. 작품에 주로 나타나는 하얀 설산과 새파란 하늘의 조화, 청명한 색의 대비, 이를 떠받드는 검은 산령의 모습은 신비하고도 초월적인 세계를 표현하고 있다. 숭고하기까지 한 설산의 모습은 세계와 진리를 상징적으로 나타내고 있다고 작가는 말한다."고 설명하면서 "작가의 그림에는 일반적인 자연의 모습을 그릴 때 많이 묘사되는 구름, 풀, 나무 등 세간의 모습이 거의 나타나지 않는다. 구름, 풀, 나무와 같은 사물은 인간의 감정에 비유한다. 즐거움과 아름다움, 슬픔, 아픔 고통 등으로 정의 되어지는 인간의 감정은 그의 절대적인 풍광 안에서 배제되었다. 명약관화하게 드러난 그대로의 절제된 풍광이 바로 그가 명상을 통하여 추구하는 궁극의 세계임을 비유한다."고 덧붙였다.
강찬모 화가는 "설산이 있는 하늘에는 별들이 서로 사랑하며 찬란하게 빛나고 있다"면서 "사람들이 이런 사실을 잊지 않았으면 한다"고 말했다.
"인간들아, 저 하늘의 별처럼 반짝반짝 사랑하며 살아라"는 메시지가 아닐까?
