[Break News Pohang] Reporter Park Young-jae = Pohang City, North Gyeongsang Province, is accelerating its comprehensive administrative efforts, ranging from expanding the supply of electric vehicles to revitalizing tourism and the local economy, as well as implementing welfare and safety policies.
Pohang City is significantly expanding the supply of electric passenger cars and trucks to achieve carbon neutrality in the transportation sector and respond to the energy crisis. With a total investment of 7.9 billion won, the city plans to distribute 450 vehicles early, including 350 electric passenger cars and 100 trucks. Applications for subsidies can be made through the Zero-Emission Vehicle Integrated Website starting from the 8th of next month. The city expects this initiative to reduce the burden on citizens caused by high fuel prices and to have a positive effect on reducing greenhouse gases and fine dust.
In the tourism sector, Space Walk, a representative attraction, will operate without closure during the Golden Week holiday in May. The city plans to enhance visitor convenience by converting May 4, a regular closing day, into a special operating day and designating May 6 as a substitute closing day.
Policies aimed at revitalizing the local economy are also being implemented in parallel. Pohang City will sell 16 billion won worth of card-type and mobile Pohang Love Gift Certificates at a 10% discount starting May 4. With a monthly purchase limit of 400,000 won and a holding limit of 700,000 won, the initiative aims to stimulate local consumption and prevent the outflow of funds by linking it with relief funds for high fuel prices.
In addition, to strengthen the competitiveness of the MICE industry, the city has launched a research project for the second phase of the expansion of the Pohang International Exhibition & Convention Center. The city plans to secure objective grounds for the project's implementation by comprehensively reviewing ripple effect analyses and strategies for attracting private investment.
In the safety sector, the city is striving for zero safety accidents ahead of the "16th Saemaul Day Commemoration and 23rd Saemaul Culture Festival" by conducting pre-event site inspections. The city is focusing on preemptive responses, including crowd management, facility safety checks, and the establishment of an emergency contact system with relevant agencies.
Various policies were also implemented in the welfare and education sectors. In celebration of the Day of Persons with Disabilities, performances were held at residential facilities for the severely disabled, contributing to the creation of an inclusive social atmosphere. Additionally, refresher training for foster parents was provided to strengthen their child-rearing capabilities. Safety management regarding hazardous substances, such as radiation and pesticide residues, was also reinforced by conducting inspections on food ingredients used in daycare center meals.
Culture and youth policies also continued. The Pohang Museum of Art operated a family-participatory sand art program to mark Family Month, while the Nam-gu Public Health Center conducted a mental health counseling program for university students at Pohang University of Science and Technology. Furthermore, the Youth Foundation launched an eco-friendly campaign in observance of Earth Day and established a cooperative system with schools to revitalize youth activities.
Through these policies, Pohang City plans to simultaneously pursue balanced development across the entire city, including carbon neutrality, the recovery of the local economy, and the expansion of culture and welfare.
