윤석열 대통령이 3일 "경북 포항 영일만 앞바다서 막대한 양의 석유가 가스가 매장돼 있을 가능성이 높다는 물리탐사 결과가 나왔다"고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 이날 오전 용산 대통령실에서 취임 후 첫 국정브리핑을 갖고 "우리 정부 들어와 지난해 2월 동해 가스전 주변에 더 많은 석유 가스전이 존재할 가능성이 높다는 판단 하에 세계 최고 수준 심해 기술 평가 전문 기업에 물리 탐사 심층 분석을 맡겼다"며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "최근 140억배럴에 달하는 석유·가스가 매장돼 있을 가능성이 매우 높다는 결과가 나왔다"며 "유수 연구 기관·전문가들 검증도 거쳤다"고 전했다.
또 "심해 광구론 금세기 최대 석유개발사업으로 평가받는 남미 다이아나 광구의 110억배럴보다 더 많은 탐사자원양이라 할 수 있다"며 "우리나라 전체가 천연가스 최대 29년, 석유는 최대 4년을 넘게 쓸 수 있는 양이라 판단된다"고 밝혔다.
이어 "석유가스전 개발은 물리탐사·탐사 시추·상업개발 3단계로 진행된다"며 "지금부턴 실제 석유·가스가 존재하는지 실제 매장 규모는 얼마나 되는지 확인하는 탐사 시추 단계로 넘어갈 차례"라고 말했다.
더불어 "최소 다섯 개 시추공을 뚫어야 하는데 한 개당 1000억원 넘는 비용이 들어간다"며 "금년 말 첫 번째 시추공 작업에 들어가면 내년 상반기까진 어느 정도 결과가 나올 것"이라고 말했다.
윤 대통령은 "산업통상자원부의 탐사 시추 계획을 승인했다"며 "국민 여러분께서 차분하게 시추 결과를 지켜봐달라"고 덧붙였다.
