돌이켜 보건데 이승만 전 대통령이 하야한 날로부터 어언 63년의 세월이 흘렀습니다. 그 동안에도 우리나라 학계를 비롯해서 여러 분야에서 이승만 건국대통령의 공과 과를 놓고 재평가해야 한다는 목소리는 이어져 왔습니다.
이러한 논의의 일환으로 2010년 4.19혁명 50주년을 맞으면서 4.19세대가 본 ‘이승만 전 대통령의 공과 과’를 주제로 학술회의가 열렸는데 불초 이 사람은 이 행사에 주제발표자로 참여해서 논문을 통해 이승만 전 대통령이 대한민국의 탄생, 존속과 발전을 위해 기여한 공로가 그분의 과오를 훨씬 능가한다는 사실을 역사적 자료를 통해 확실히 논증하고 앞으로 우리 4.19세대들이 이승만 전 대통령의 재평가에 앞장서야 한다고 주창한 바 있습니다.

대한민국의 정통성을 허물기 위해 북한이 지속적으로 펼치는 ‘반이승만 공세’를 우리 정부가 방치하거나 외면하는 틈을 타서 일부 학계의 좌파분자들은 이승만 전 대통령의 업적을 대한민국 현대사에서 지우거나 왜곡시켜왔고 이러한 세력들이 교육계에도 침투, 왜곡된 역사를 학생들에게 가르친 결과 현재 이승만 전 대통령을 바로, 제대로 아는 학생들이 사실상 실종상태가 되어 버렸습니다.
다행히 윤석열 대통령이 작년 3월 이승만 초대 대통령을 대통령예우에 관한 법률에 의거, 기념관을 건립하고 공과 과를 분명히 밝혀 역사에 귀감을 삼자고 제창하면서부터 국내분위기는 크게 달라졌고 이승만 전 대통령 재평가의 분위기도 고조되었습니다.
그 결과로 독립운동지도자로서의 이승만 전 대통령의 생애와 그 분의 정치역정을 담은 다큐멘터리 영화가 여러 편 제작되었고 180여 만 명이 시청하는 성과도 올렸습니다. 또 오늘 이 자리처럼 20여개의 학계, 정계, 언론계, 시민단체들이 하나로 뜻을 모아 이승만 전 대통령 묘소 앞에서 합동추모제를 올리는 뜻밖의 행사도 열리게 되었습니다.
오늘 합동추모제는 이 사실 하나만 가지고도 역사적 의의가 클 뿐만 아니라 이승만 전 대통령의 업적을 폄하하고 왜곡시키는 좌익세력들에 대해서도 큰 반격이 될 것으로 저는 확신합니다. 또 그간 우리 국내에서도 이승만 대통령을 독재자로 규탄하는 목소리가 높았습니다.
그러나 제가 전 세계 신생독립국가들을 조사해본 결과 국민들이 하야하라고 해서 대통령직을 물러난 사람은 이승만 전 대통령을 제외하고는 하나도 없었습니다.
이승만 전 대통령은 3.15부정선거와 여기에 항의하는 4.19 시위에서 많은 희생자들이 생긴 사실을 뒤늦게 보고받고 통회(痛悔(하면서 스스로 책임을 지고 권자에서 물러났습니다.
그 분이 하야하고 새로운 선거로 정부가 세워졌기 때문에 ‘대한민국은 민주공화국이다’는 이 나라의 국체와 정체는 전혀 달라지지 않았고 지금도 유지, 발전되고 있습니다.
이런 맥락에 비추어 이승만 전 대통령이 3선 개헌으로 집권 기간을 연장했다고 해서 그분을 독재자로 단죄, 악마 프레임을 씌우는 것은 결코 옳지 않다고 보는데 여러분들은 어떻게 생각하십니까.
