김용식 회장의 말이다.
눈앞의 현실을 넘는 세계로의 미래를 보는 혜안이야말로 오늘날 우리가 명심해야 할 자세이다. 젊어 그는 유망한 복서였다. 대학 시절 체육특기생으로 전국체전과 학생선수권 2회 우승하는 등 복서로의 유망한 길을 걸었지만, 태생적으로 바람같이 흐르는 것을 좋아한 풍운아인 그는 개척의 삶을 선택했다.
개척은 도전이다. 그는 거리 한복판에 서서 시대를 살았다. 그는 늘 물음을 가지고 있다. 그는 사각의 링 위에서 싸움보다 세계라는 무대를 택했다. 세계를 장터 삼아 1970년대 수출주도 시대를 여는 전략적인 삶에 투신했다. 대한민국을 전 세계에 알리는 박람회(博覽會)를 무대로 한국 상품과 문화를 가지고 종횡으로 누비며 세계를 향한 복싱(?)을 했다.
대한무역진흥공사가 마련한 국제박람회는 세계의 물류가 모이는 곳이다. 한국 수출의 전략적 단위이다. 이곳을 무대로 김용식 회장은 전시, 기획, 유통, 문화예술 공연을 펼쳤다. 아프리카와 남미 유럽을 순회하며, 특히 러시아, 프랑스, 칠레 박람회 등 수많은 국가에서 한국박람회를 총괄하는 인솔단장을 40여 차례 역임했다. 이후 보다 체계화 된 박람회 준비를 위해 주해실업(주)영상사업단을 만들었다.
그가 올해 연말 선물로. 오랜 친구인 권투선수인 홍수환과 가수 옥희 두 부부를 위한 연말 디너 콘서트를 만들었다. “Again 1974 Party Dinner concert”. 1974년 그날을 기억하는 50주년 기념 공연을 오는 12월 30일 저녁 6시 30분 남산 하야트 서울호텔 그랜드 볼륨에서 펼친다. 한참 전 그와 차를 나누고 있을 때 홍수환으로부터 온 전화 “오랜 친구인데 왜 우리 옥희 가수 무대 한번 안하냐?”라는, 따끔한 경고 같은 부탁의 말에 그의 마음도 동감한 듯했다.
1974년이었다. 4전 5기의 신화로 세계 챔피언 카라스키아의 불 주먹을 녹여버린 홍수환의 불굴의 투지는 대한민국 전역을 환호의 도가니로 몰아넣었다.
그리고 “엄마! 나 챔피언 먹었어.”“그래 장하다 대한국민 만세다”는 시대의 유행어가 됐다.
이번 콘서트는 홍수환 세계 챔피언 50주년 기념으로 영원한 디바 옥희의 콘서트가 열린다. 특별출연으로 한국코미디언협회장 엄영수가 함께한다.

이번 콘서트에 대해 김용식 회장은 ‘국내 첫 세계 챔피언 등극 50주년과 두 번째 세계 챔피언 등극을 기념하고, 2024년 파나마 대통령 취임식에 대통령 특사로 방문을 기념, 홍수환의 젊은 시절부터 선수 생활 기록과 사진전이 함께 전시되고 홍수환의 노래 솜씨를 들어 볼 예정이다’ 라고 말했다. 이어 ‘이날 화려한 디너 콘서트를 수놓을 영원한 디바 옥희에 대해 ‘중-고교 시절 미국 오디션 프로에 최연소로 합격, 미국 라스베이거스로 진출하여 서울 시스터즈, 김 시스터즈, 코리아 키츤즈와 함께 미국 전역 공연을 펼치다가 1974년 귀국 “나는 몰라요” “눈으로 말해요”“이웃사촌”을 히트시키며 1970년대 중반 KBS, MBC, TBC 방송 3사 7대 가수 및 10대 가수상을 휩쓸었다’소개하고 있다.
김용식 회장은 이날 행사 총연출 및 제작을 맡고 있다. 김용식 회장은 40년 성상 안 80여 차례 해외동포 위문공연과 국내 정상급 가수들 디너 쇼를 만들었다. 패티김과 현미, 나훈아, 남진, 윤복희, 서수남, 혜은이, 김수희, 김부자, 전영록, 민해경, 노사연, 최진희, 현숙, 설운도, 장미화, 방주연, 탈렌트 김성환, 개그맨 최병서 코미디언 배연정 등 130여 차례 기획, 제작, 연출을 통해 무대화 했다.
김용식은 마의(摩)의 손을 가진 마스터이다. 수많은 국제박람회의 개막식과 문화공연, 해외동포 위문공연, 국내 최고 가수들의 디너 콘서트에 이르기까지 그의 손을 거쳐 상품화되고 유통되고 최고의 등극에 오르는 명운을 만들었다. 그는 한편으로 한반도 통일지도자 공동회장 겸 부총재, 국가원로회의 정책위원, 고려대학교 총동문회 상임이사, 한국가수협회 고문을 역임했다.
‘어렵던 시절에는 스포츠 챔피언도 눈물겹게 힘들고 배고팠던 시절에 유능한 선수가 나온다. 풍요 속에 민요, 판소리, 성악을 하는 사람까지 트로트 경연에 참여하니 가요와 국악, 국악과 성악이 뒤섞여 정체성을 잃게 될까 걱정스럽다. 국악은 국악의 맛이 있고, 성악은 성악의 맛이 있을 텐데, 왜 이들이 트로트 경연에 모여드는 것일까. 꾸준히 노력하면, 가락의 맛도 알고 그 분야에 유명인이 될텐데... 이유는 국악이나, 성악은 노력한 만큼 대우를 받지 못함은 아닐까 하는 생각이 든다.
