남미와 남도의 민속과 문화를 잇는 사진작가이자 영상작가인 박명화의 사진전이 전라남도 인재개발원(원장:윤연화. 주소=강진군 도암면 다산인재길 10)에서 2024년12월2일부터 2025년1월31일까지 열린다.
전라남도 인재개발원은 전라남도 공무원의 전문성과 역량 강화를 위해 다양한 교육과정을 운영하는 기관. 이번 전시는 남미에서 받은 사랑과 영감을 한국의 남도에서 전시하는 의미 깊은 자리이다.
이번 전시는 2022년 한중남미 수교 60주년을 맞이하여 한국개발원(KDI)과 주한 아르헨티나 대사관에서 전시되었던 사진 중 일부를 선별하여 전시된다. 전시된 22점의 작품은 브라질, 아르헨티나, 페루, 멕시코, 과테말라, 베네수엘라, 파나마로 8개국에서 촬영된 사진으로, 그 지역들의 민속과 문화를 풀어냈다.

박명화 작가는 작가노트에서 “지구 반대편, 남미는 유럽의 섬세함, 아프리카의 야성, 그리고 동양의 신비로움이 공존하는 매혹적인 대륙이다. 사진작가 박명화에게 남미는 단순한 여행지를 넘어, 영감의 원천이자 뮤즈였다. 그곳은 그의 동심과 모험심을 자극하는 동시에 내면 속 깊은 자아와 마주하는 특별한 공간이었다. 인종과 문화의 용광로라 불리는 남미에서 박명화가 만난 찬란한 순간들은 화려한 이벤트가 아닌, 평범한 일상 속의 빛이었다”고 설명하고 “찬란한 문명을 꽃피웠던 남미는 부침의 세월을 겪으며, 그들이 품었던 한(恨)과 희로애락이 뒤섞이고 여과되면서 독특한 무늬와 무의식으로 승화되었다. 이는 날것의 생동감과 숙성된 깊이가 어우러진 고유의 ‘민속문화’로 피어났다. 오늘날에도 이 문화는 남미 사람들의 삶을 지탱하는 뿌리이자 끊임없이 생명을 불어넣는 원동력으로 남아 있다”고 소개했다.
이어 “남미의 낯선 민속문화를 접하며 박명화는 놀랍게도 ‘한국의 남도’에서 느꼈던 진한 사람 냄새와 따스한 정 그리고 남도의 문화를 떠올렸다. 그것은 국경과 언어를 초월해 인간 본연의 감성을 자극하여 마음 깊은 곳까지 강렬한 울림을 선사해 주었다. 이번 ‘남미 돌아 남도’ 전시는 20여년에 걸쳐 축적된 박명화의 남미를 향한 깊은 사랑과 열정을 담아낸 특별한 자리이다. 브라질, 아르헨티나, 멕시코, 과테말라, 페루 등 남미 8개국에서 촬영된 사진들이 남도와 남미를 잇는 가교가 되어 관객에게 새로운 시각적 여정으로 안내하길 기대한다”고 덧붙였다.

박명화 사진작가는 어떤 인물?
사진작가&영상크리에이터&중남미스토리텔러. 서울출생/상명대학교 사진학과 졸업/경향신문사 출판사진국 기자/현 목포대학교 관광학과 석사과정. 10여 년간 다양한 매거진과 광고사진에서 활동해 온 박명화는 2005년 13개국에 걸친 남미 배낭여행을 계기로 다큐멘터리 사진의 길로 전향했다. 그 후 꾸준히 남미를 오가며, 여러 채널을 통해 한국에 남미의 매력을 알리는 데 힘써왔다. 한국에서는 K-문화를 사랑하는 남미 사람들에게 다채로운 ‘남도문화’를 알리기 위해 사진과 영상 작업을 활발히 진행하고 있다. 현재 진도 옥주골 창작소의 입주작가로서 새로운 시각적 스토리를 만들어가고 있다.

A photo exhibition by Park Myeong-hwa, a photographer and video artist who connects the folklore and culture of South America and the South Province, will be held at the Jeollanam-do Human Resources Development Center (Director: Yoon Yeon-hwa. Address: 10 Dasan Injae-gil, Doam-myeon, Gangjin-gun) from December 2, 2024 to January 31, 2025.
The Jeollanam-do Human Resources Development Center is an institution that operates various educational programs to enhance the expertise and capabilities of Jeollanam-do public officials. This exhibition is a meaningful place to display the love and inspiration received from South America in the South Province of Korea.
This exhibition will feature some of the photos that were exhibited at the Korea Development Institute (KDI) and the Argentine Embassy in Korea in celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea, China, and South America in 2022. The 22 works on display were taken in eight countries: Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela, and Panama, and they portray the folklore and culture of those regions. In his artist’s note, Park Myung-hwa said, “On the other side of the globe, South America is a fascinating continent where the delicacy of Europe, the wildness of Africa, and the mystery of the East coexist. For photographer Park Myung-hwa, South America was more than just a travel destination; it was a source of inspiration and a muse. It was a special space that stimulated his childlike innocence and sense of adventure while also allowing him to encounter his inner self. “The brilliant moments that Park Myung-hwa encountered in South America, which is called the melting pot of race and culture, were not flashy events, but the light of ordinary daily life,” he explained, and “South America, which had blossomed into a brilliant civilization, experienced ups and downs, and the resentment and joy and sorrow they harbored were mixed and filtered, sublimated into unique patterns and unconsciousness. This blossomed into a unique ‘folk culture’ that combines raw vitality and mature depth. Even today, this culture remains the root that supports the lives of South Americans and the driving force that constantly breathes life into them.” He continued, “While encountering the unfamiliar folk culture of South America, Park Myung-hwa surprisingly recalled the strong human scent, warm affection, and culture of the ‘Southern Province of Korea.’ It transcended borders and language, stimulating the innate emotions of humans and giving them a strong resonance deep in the heart. Photographer, video creator, and Central and South American storyteller. Born in Seoul/ Graduated from Sangmyung University, Department of Photography/ Reporter at Kyunghyang Shinmun Publishing Photo Department/ Currently a master’s student in the Department of Tourism at Mokpo National University. Having worked in various magazines and advertising photography for over 10 years, Park Myung-hwa turned to documentary photography in 2005 after a backpacking trip to 13 countries in South America. Since then, he has been traveling to South America steadily and has worked hard to introduce the charm of South America to Korea through various channels. In Korea, he is actively working on photography and video to introduce the diverse ‘South American culture’ to South Americans who love K-culture.
