많은 교민이 생활하는 미국 로스앤젤레스(LA) 산불 피해가 엄중하다. 미국 역사상 최대 재난인 LA 산불은 7일 전 북서부 팰리세이즈 지역에서 최초로 발화되어 동부 알타데나와 패서디나 지역 이튼 산불과 북부 허스트 산불 등 무려 7여 곳의 동시다발 산불로 그 피해가 상상을 초월한다.
북부 허스트 산불은 진화되었다. 그러나 산타모니카 산맥과 태평양 사이 LA 해안가 퍼시픽 팰리세이즈 산불은 알타데나와 패서디나 지역 이튼 산불은 강한 계절풍 산타 아나(Santa Ana)가 악마의 바람이 되어 사상 초유의 화마로 발전하였다. 특히 미국 국립기상청 예보에 따르면 시속 80-112km의 건조한 산타아나 바람이 수요일까지 예보되어 피해가 더욱 늘어날 것으로 예상된다.
여기저기 안부를 물었다. 다행히 직접 피해가 있는 지인은 없었다. 특히 패서디나에 거주하시는 Sookie Huskey 선생님 안부가 걱정되어 먼저 위성 사진 구글 어스로 살펴보았다. 문제는 없었지만, 산불 지역과 멀지 않은 걱정에 연락드렸더니 지인 5명의 집이 모두 불타버린 참담한 상황을 전하였다. 은막의 여왕 김지미 선생님과 지근에 거주하며 늘 동행하시기에 안부를 물었더니 무탈하시다고 전해왔다.

생각나는 젊은 시인이 있었다. 세상의 그릇됨을 질타하고 소외된 어둠을 비추는 미국의 젊은 여성 시인 '아만다 고먼'이다. 시인은 2015년 17살 나이에 시집 “음식만으로는 충분하지 않은 사람(The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough)”을 출판하여 인간성의 소중함을 일깨웠다. 이후 하버드에 진학하여 사회학을 공부하면서 2017년 미국 최초의 청년 계관시인(National Youth Poet Laureate) 수상자로 선정되었다.
이틀 전 시인이 SNS에 발표한 LA 산불 피해 애도의 시 '불타는 새벽(Smoldering Dawn)'과 그녀가 2021년 1월 20일 조 바이든 대통령 취임식에서 최연소 시인으로 낭송한 '우리가 오르는 언덕(The Hill We Climb)'의 구절들을 가슴에서 매만졌다.
