일본의 뉴에이지 피아니스트 나카무라 유리코(中村 由利子)의 손끝에 건반이 닿을 때마다 한 음, 한 음의 선율은 하얀 화선지에 배어드는 먹빛 수묵이었다. 들녘의 들풀을 깨우는 쓸쓸한 바람이 되어 깊은 산으로 날아가 애써 울음을 참는 기척으로 숲속 나뭇잎에 대롱거렸다.
때론 속살 훤한 부끄러움에 침묵하는 강물이었다가 다투어 쏟아지는 시선을 차마 감당하지 못하고 몸부림으로 일렁이는 물결이었으며 선율 마디 마디에 깊은 감성의 빛깔을 담아 듣는 이의 마음을 천천히 물들여 갔다. 비 내리는 유리창에 누군가의 통증을 대신 울어주는 대역의 눈물처럼 소중한 쉼표로 존재하던 음악이 어느 날 멈추어 있었다.
바람으로, 물결로, 누군가의 눈물을 대신하던 음악을 찾아 나섰다. 풍경화가 아버지에게 어려서부터 그림을 배운 그녀는 1987년 감성적인 자작곡을 모은 앨범 바람의 거울(風の鏡)로 뉴에이지 음악가로 데뷔하였다. 그가 세상에 널리 알려진 것은 1990년 특성적인 구도와 감각적인 빛의 활용으로 풍경의 혼을 담아낸 사진작가 마에다 신조(前田新三)와의 협업에서였다.
마에다 신조가 일본 홋카이도의 명승 지역 비에이초의 파란 연못(青い池)과 사계의 언덕(四季彩の丘)을 소재로 한 비디오 작업의 음악을 나카무라 유리코가 작업하였다. 당시 탄생한 음악이 ‘시간의 꽃 다발(時の花束)’, ‘아틀리에의 휴일(アトリエの休日)’, ‘또 하나의 봄(アナザー・スプリング)’이다.

2005년 12월에는 2001년 크로스오버 앨범 우회(Detour)를 통하여 시대를 관통한 히트곡 ‘10월의 어느 멋진 날에’를 세상에 알린 바리톤 성악가 김동규와 조인트 콘서트를 서울 리틀엔젤스홀에서 열었다. 이어 연말에는 잠실 롯데호텔에서 'JMIC 크리스마스 콘서트' 공연이 있었다,
이후 나카무라 유리코는 애니메이션의 태양 미야자키 하야오(宮崎駿) 감독과 협업하였다. 미야자키 하야오 감독은 2001년 도쿄 미타카시의 이노카시라 공원 서쪽 미타카의 숲에 애니메이션 박물관 지브라 미술관을 개관하였다. 미야자키 하야오 감독은 어린 소년이 신성한 별의 씨앗을 손에 들게 된 이야기로 시작되는 환상적인 세계를 펼치는 애니메이션 작품 ‘별을 샀던 날(星を買った日)’을 제작하였다.
이는 미술관을 찾는 어린이들을 위하여 상영하려는 작품이었다. 작품은 오늘날에도 상영되고 있다. 깊은 뜻을 품은 신성한 음악을 나카무라 유리코가 작업한 것이다.
