[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 제30회 부산국제영화제 조직위원회는 올해 한국영화공로상(Korean Cinema Award) 수상자로 정지영 감독을 선정했다고 6일 밝혔다.
한국영화공로상은 한국영화의 발전에 기여한 영화인에게 수여하는 상으로, 오는 9월 17일(수) 영화제 개막식에서 시상이 진행될 예정이다.
사회적 메시지를 담은 작품으로 한국 영화계에 뚜렷한 족적 남겨
정지영 감독은 1982년 영화 안개는 여자처럼 속삭인다로 데뷔한 이후, 지난 40여 년간 한국 사회의 이면과 시대적 과제를 조명한 작품들로 관객과 평단의 주목을 받아왔다. 대표작으로는 남부군(1990), 하얀 전쟁(1992), 헐리우드 키드의 생애(1994), 부러진 화살(2011), 남영동1985(2012), 블랙머니(2019), 소년들(2020) 등이 있다.
이들 작품은 사회적 갈등, 인권, 정의 등 묵직한 주제를 다루며 한국 현대사의 중요한 순간들을 영화적으로 기록했다는 평가를 받고 있다.
영화계 내외에서 다양한 역할 수행
감독 활동 외에도 정지영 감독은 부천국제판타스틱영화제 조직위원장, 아시아나국제단편영화제 및 제천국제음악영화제 심사위원장 등을 역임하며 영화제 운영과 후배 영화인 양성에 기여했다.
또한 스크린쿼터 제도 수호, 영화 검열제도 폐지, 대기업의 스크린 독과점 해소 등 영화산업 구조 개선을 위한 활동에도 적극 참여해 왔다. 이 같은 활동은 한국 영화의 권익 보호와 다양성 증진에 중요한 역할을 해온 것으로 평가된다.

부산국제영화제 정한석 집행위원장은 “정지영 감독은 오랜 세월 뛰어난 영화감독이었으며, 현재에도 최고령 현역 감독으로 신작을 준비하고 있다”며, “그의 생애와 영화에는 한국의 역사와 영화사가 오롯이 담겨 있다”고 수상 선정 이유를 밝혔다.

수상 소감에서 정지영 감독은 “한국영화의 암흑기와 황금기를 모두 거쳐, 다시 위기에 처한 2025년까지도 영화 작업을 계속하고 있다”며, “이 상은 그 세월을 함께해 온 영화계 선후배 동료 여러분들을 대신해 받는 상”이라고 밝혔다. 이어 “작년에 저세상으로 떠난 제 아내에게도 고맙다는 말을 전하고 싶다”고 덧붙였다.
신작 내 이름은 연출 중… 활발한 창작 활동 이어가
충청북도 청주 출신인 정지영 감독은 1976년 김수용 감독의 조감독으로 영화계에 입문했다. 이후 한국의 근현대사를 배경으로 한 다양한 영화들을 통해 사회적 변화에 기여해 왔다.
그의 공로는 국내외에서도 인정받아, 화관문화훈장을 비롯해 청룡영화상, 대종상영화제, 백상예술대상, 황금촬영상, 한국영화평론가협회상, 런던아시아영화제 등에서 감독상과 공로상을 수상했다. 현재는 제주 4·3 사건을 다룬 신작 내 이름은을 제작 및 연출하며 활발한 작품 활동을 이어가고 있다.
한편 제30회 부산국제영화제는 오는 9월 17일(수)부터 9월 26일(금)까지 영화의전당 일대에서 열흘간 개최될 예정이다. 영화제 측은 올해도 다양한 국내외 작품들과 행사를 통해 영화 팬들과 만날 예정이다.

Chung Ji-young made his directorial debut in 1982 with The Fog Whispers Like a Woman and has spent over four decades exploring the hidden facets of Korean society and pressing social issues. His notable works include Nambugun (1990), White Badge (1992), Life and Death of the Hollywood Kid (1994), Unbowed (2011), National Security (2012), Black Money (2019), and The Boys (2020).
These films have tackled heavy themes such as social conflict, human rights, and justice, leaving a lasting impact on the history of Korean cinema.
Contributions Beyond Directing
Beyond his work as a filmmaker, Chung has held several key roles in the film industry, including serving as chair of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival and jury head at the Asiana International Short Film Festival and Jecheon International Music & Film Festival. He has also been actively involved in initiatives to reform the film industry--supporting the screen quota system, calling for the abolition of censorship, and advocating for the resolution of screen monopolies by large corporations.
These efforts have significantly contributed to protecting the rights and promoting the diversity of Korean cinema.

In his acceptance speech, Director Chung said, “I have worked through the dark ages and golden era of Korean cinema, and continue my work today in 2025, at a time when the industry faces new challenges. I accept this award on behalf of all my colleagues--both seniors and juniors--who have shared this journey with me.” He also expressed gratitude to his late wife, saying, “I want to thank my wife, who passed away last year.”

Born in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, Chung entered the film industry in 1976 as an assistant director to Kim Soo-yong. Throughout his career, he has portrayed significant moments in modern Korean history through film, contributing to social discourse and change.
His contributions have been recognized both domestically and internationally, with numerous awards including the Order of Cultural Merit (Hwagwan), Blue Dragon Film Awards, Grand Bell Awards, Baeksang Arts Awards, Golden Cinematography Awards, Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, and the London Asian Film Festival.
He is currently directing My Name Is, a new film focusing on the Jeju April 3 Incident, continuing his commitment to socially conscious storytelling.
