[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 올해로 30회를 맞는 부산국제영화제가 아시아 영화사를 빛낸 거장들의 대표작을 한자리에 모은 특별기획 프로그램 ‘아시아영화의 결정적 순간들’을 선보인다.
영화제는 이번 기획을 통해 시대와 국경을 넘어 관객의 마음을 움직여온 명작들을 조명하며, 아시아 영화의 흐름과 미학을 되짚는 시간을 마련한다.
이번 특별 프로그램은 부산국제영화제가 부산대학교 영화연구소, 한국영상자료원과 공동 주최로 진행하는 세 번째 ‘아시아영화 100’ 프로젝트로, 2015년 이후 아시아영화의 역사적 가치를 정리해 온 대표적 아카이빙 기획이다. 전 세계 영화감독, 평론가, 연구자 등 총 161명이 참여한 설문을 통해 **119편의 작품(동점작 포함)**이 선정되었으며, 이 중 10편의 영화를 엄선해 영화제에서 공식 초청 상영한다.
상영작은 작품성뿐 아니라 '감독 및 주요 배우가 직접 참석해 관객과의 대화(GV)'를 통해 창작의 배경, 아시아영화가 지닌 미학과 시대적 의미를 공유하는 자리도 마련돼 영화 팬들의 기대를 모은다.
아시아 영화계의 전설들이 부산으로… 파나히부터 박찬욱까지 한자리에
올해 초청된 인물과 작품 면면도 화려하다. ‘올해의 아시아영화인상’ 수상자 자파르 파나히 감독은 <이것은 영화가 아니다>로 부산을 찾는다. 억압 속에서도 영화와 자유를 향한 강렬한 메시지를 담은 이 작품은 영화 그 자체에 대한 질문을 던지는 다큐멘터리로 주목받았다.
이란 여성 감독 마르지예 메쉬키니의 <내가 여자가 된 날>은 지난 2000년 부산국제영화제 뉴 커런츠상을 수상한 바 있으며, 다시 한 번 독창적인 시선과 여성서사로 관객을 만난다.
중국 사회의 변화상을 예리하게 포착해온 지아장커 감독의 <스틸 라이프>, 대만 뉴웨이브를 대표하는 차이밍량 감독과 배우 이강생의 실험적 걸작 <안녕, 용문객잔>도 주목된다. 여기에 왕빙 감독의 장편 다큐멘터리 <철서구>, 홍콩 누아르의 대가 두기봉 감독의 <흑사회> 등 중국어권 영화의 다양한 스펙트럼이 담긴 작품들도 상영된다.
일본에서는 배우 야기라 유야가 직접 참석해, 자신이 2004년 칸영화제 남우주연상을 수상한 영화 <아무도 모른다>(고레에다 히로카즈 감독)를 소개한다. 또한 하마구치 류스케 감독의 세계적 히트작 <드라이브 마이 카>도 함께 상영되어, 일본 현대영화의 성취를 공유한다.
한국 작품으로는 이창동 감독의 <버닝>, 그리고 최근 '뉴욕타임즈 ‘세계 영화 100선’에 다시 선정된 박찬욱 감독의 <올드보이>'가 초청돼, K-시네마의 미학과 세계적 반향을 함께 되돌아볼 기회를 제공한다.
‘아시아영화 100’ 프로젝트의 세 번째 장… 도서 발간과 함께한 기록의 가치
이번 기획은 2015년 최고의 아시아영화를, 2021년에는 최고의 아시아 여성 영화를 선정한 데 이어 세 번째로 진행되는 ‘아시아영화 100’ 프로젝트의 일환이다. 설문에는 34개국 161명의 영화 전문가가 참여했으며, 그 결과는 단순한 순위가 아닌 아시아영화의 흐름과 변화를 기록하는 문화적 지도로 기능할 전망이다.
부산국제영화제 측은 이 결과를 바탕으로 도서 『아시아영화의 결정적 순간들 - 1996년 이후 최고의 아시아영화 100』을 출간할 예정이다. 이 책에는 한국과 아시아 각국의 감독, 평론가들이 참여해 ‘내가 사랑한 아시아영화’라는 주제로 에세이를 기고했다. 영화에 대한 애정과 개인적인 기억을 담은 글들은 독자들에게 작품에 대한 새로운 시각을 제공하고, 영화제의 감동을 오랫동안 곱씹을 수 있는 지적 여운을 남길 것으로 기대된다.
9월 17일부터 10일간, 다시 한 번 영화의 도시가 된다
한편, 제30회 부산국제영화제는 9월 17일(수)부터 9월 26일(금)까지 10일간, 해운대구 영화의전당 일대에서 개최된다. 특별기획 ‘아시아영화의 결정적 순간들’을 포함해 다양한 국내외 프로그램이 마련될 예정으로, 올해 영화제가 단순한 상영의 장을 넘어 영화와 시대, 사람과 사람을 연결하는 결정적 순간들로 채워질 예정이다.

Co-organized by BIFF, the Pusan National University Film Institute, and the Korean Film Archive, this special showcase marks the third edition of the long-term project “Asian Cinema 100.” After its first launch in 2015, the initiative has continued to spotlight the evolution and value of Asian cinema through critical and historical lenses.
This year, the selected films will not only be screened but will also be followed by GV (Guest Visit) sessions, where directors and key cast members engage directly with audiences to discuss the creative background and aesthetic significance of their works.
Cinema Legends Gather in Busan - From Jafar Panahi to Park Chan-wook
The lineup of participating filmmakers and actors reflects the impressive scope of the program. Leading the group is Jafar Panahi, recipient of this year’s Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award, who will present This Is Not a Film, a bold work that questions the very nature of filmmaking under repression.
Also returning to Busan is Iranian director Marzieh Meshkini with The Day I Became a Woman, which won the New Currents Award at BIFF in 2000 and is celebrated for its unique feminist perspective.
Chinese director Jia Zhangke’s Still Life, known for its piercing depiction of a changing Chinese society, will be screened alongside Goodbye, Dragon Inn by Taiwanese master Tsai Ming-liang, a pioneer of spatial and temporal experimentation in cinema. Wang Bing’s epic documentary West of the Tracks and Hong Kong auteur Johnnie To’s noir classic Election will also be featured, showcasing the diverse cinematic voices from Greater China.
From Japan, actor Yuya Yagira, who won Best Actor at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival for Nobody Knows (directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda), will attend in person to present his iconic role. Also included in the program is Drive My Car by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, which garnered global acclaim and a Best Screenplay award at Cannes 2021.
Representing Korea are Lee Chang-dong’s Burning, an adaptation of a Haruki Murakami short story, and Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy, which recently reappeared in The New York Times’ “100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century.” These selections highlight not only the aesthetic excellence of Korean cinema but also its deep cultural resonance worldwide.
Third Chapter of “Asian Cinema 100” - Featuring a New Book to Mark the Legacy
The current edition of “Asian Cinema 100” follows the 2015 survey of the greatest Asian films and the 2021 edition focused on Asian women’s cinema. This year, 161 directors, producers, actors, critics, researchers, and film programmers from 34 countries participated in the selection process, which resulted in a final list of 119 films, including ties. Ten of these have been officially invited for screening.
To further commemorate the project, BIFF will publish a book titled “Decisive Moments of Asian Cinema - 100 Greatest Asian Films Since 1996.” This publication will include detailed introductions to all 119 selected films and personal essays under the theme “The Asian Films I Love,” written by filmmakers and critics from across Asia. These heartfelt contributions are expected to offer readers a deeper appreciation of the cinematic heritage celebrated in the program.

The 30th Busan International Film Festival will take place over 10 days, from September 17 (Wednesday) to September 26 (Friday), centered around the Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae-gu. With its special program “Decisive Moments of Asian Cinema” and a diverse range of international screenings, BIFF 2025 promises to deliver not only cinematic excellence but also a profound reflection on how cinema captures history, identity, and emotion across generations.
