국회 교육위원회 소속 문정복 의원(더불어민주당, 경기 시흥갑)이 한국장학재단으로부터 제출받은 자료에 따르면, 2025년 7월 기준 학자금대출 일반상환 연체자는 22,104명으로, 2022년 17,774명에서 불과 3년 만에 4,300여 명이 증가했다. 같은 기간 연체 잔액도 899억 원에서 1,148억 원으로 늘었다.
특히 일반 상환 학자금 대출은 취업 후 상환 학자금 대출과 달리 이자 면제 혜택이 없어 학생들에게 더 큰 경제적 부담으로 작용하고 있다.
