창원시는 지난 2일 환경부가 주관한 '2025년 지자체 탄소중립 우수 사례' 공모에서 기초지자체 부문 1등을 차지하며 환경부 장관 기관 표창을 받게 되었다고 10일 밝혔다.
이번 수상은 전국 광역 및 기초지자체 76곳이 제출한 우수사례에 대해 전문가들의 엄격한 심사를 거쳐 선정된 결과로, 창원시는 경쟁이 치열했던 기초지자체 중 가장 높은 점수를 획득하며 영남권에서는 유일하게 탄소중립 우수 지자체로 이름을 올렸다.
환경부는 창원시가 기업, 시민 등 다양한 주체와 적극적으로 협력하여 실효성 있고 독특한(unique) 탄소중립 정책을 추진했다는 점을 높이 평가했다. 수상 지자체로는 창원을 포함한 기초 4개소(광주 남구, 속초, 서울 서초), 광역 2개소(경기, 대구), 기업 1개소(한국남부발전) 등 총 7개소다.
