이번 순례는 불교학부 학생회 주관으로 진행됐으며, 불교동아리 ‘부루나’ 회원을 비롯한 불교학부 재학생 100여 명이 참여했다. 유진 스님을 비롯해 석길암, 한지연 교수 등 교원도 함께해 학생들과 뜻깊은 시간을 가졌다.
순례단은 승보종찰 송광사, 화엄종의 근본도량 화엄사, 구산선문 중 첫 번째로 세워진 실상산문 실상사, 법보종찰 해인사, 불보종찰 통도사 등 한국불교의 대표 성지를 차례로 방문하며 참배와 수행 체험을 이어갔다.
이번 불교문화유산 순례는 ‘건학이념의 체득과 불교공동체 의식 고취’를 목표로 마련됐다. 학생들은 새벽 4시 예불과 공양, 사찰 순례, 저녁 법문 등 전통 사찰의 일과를 그대로 따라 수행하며 불교의 수행정신을 몸소 체험했다.
순례 첫날인 11일, 동국대 WISE캠퍼스에서 입재식을 가진 뒤 송광사를 방문해 국사전과 보조국사 지눌 스님의 감로탑을 참배했다. 이어 화엄사로 이동해 각황전을 비롯한 화엄성지를 둘러보고, 저녁에는 화엄사 교구장 우석 스님의 법문을 들으며 하루 일정을 마무리했다.
둘째 날에는 새벽예불 후 화엄사 순례를 마친 뒤 실상사와 해인사를 방문했고, 마지막 날에는 해인사 장경판전을 참배한 뒤 통도사 금강계단에서 회향식을 올리며 3일간의 순례 일정을 마쳤다.
석길암 불교학부장은 “이번 삼보사찰 순례는 강의실에서 배운 불교이론을 실제 수행 현장에서 체험하는 살아있는 교육의 장이었다”며 “학생들이 불교공동체의 일원으로서 정체성을 확립하고, 건학이념을 내면화하는 계기가 되기를 바란다”고 말했다.
불교학전공 24학번 신정원 학생은 “삼보사찰 순례를 통해 신심이 더욱 깊어졌다”며 “앞으로 더 많은 순례 프로그램을 기획하고 싶다는 생각이 들었다. 물심양면으로 지원해주신 학교법인 산하기업 정진코퍼레이션에도 감사드린다”고 소감을 전했다.

Dongguk University WISE Campus Department of Buddhist Studies Embraces Buddhist Spirit with Pilgrimage to Three Jewel Temples
The Department of Buddhist Studies at Dongguk University WISE Campus (President Ryu Wan-ha) and the College of Buddhist Culture (Dean Venerable Yu Jin) conducted a three-day, two-night "Samjeom Temple Pilgrimage" from the 11th to the 13th.
This pilgrimage was organized by the Student Council of the Department of Buddhist Studies, and approximately 100 students, including members of the Buddhist club "Buruna," participated. Venerable Yu Jin, along with faculty members such as Seok Gil-am and Professor Han Ji-yeon, also participated, sharing a meaningful experience with the students.
The pilgrims visited representative sacred sites of Korean Buddhism, including Songgwangsa Temple, the head temple of the Seungbo Order; Hwaeomsa Temple, the founding temple of the Hwaeom Order; Silsangsa Temple, the first temple of the Nine Mountain Seon Order; Haeinsa Temple, the head temple of the Beopbo Order; and Tongdosa Temple, the head temple of the Buddha Order. They engaged in worship and spiritual practice.
This Buddhist cultural heritage pilgrimage aimed to "learn the founding philosophy of the university and foster a sense of Buddhist community." Students experienced the spirit of Buddhist practice firsthand by following traditional temple routines, including a 4 a.m. service, offerings, temple pilgrimage, and evening sermons.
On the first day of the pilgrimage, the 11th, they held an initiation ceremony at Dongguk University's WISE Campus. They then visited Songgwangsa Temple, where they paid homage to the National Preceptor's Hall and the Gamrotap Pagoda of Venerable Jinul, the Assistant State Preceptor. They then moved on to Hwaeomsa Temple, where they toured the Hwaeom sacred sites, including Gakhwangjeon Hall. In the evening, they concluded the day with a sermon by Venerable Wooseok, the head monk of Hwaeomsa Temple.
On the second day, after a morning service, they completed the pilgrimage to Hwaeomsa Temple, then visited Silsangsa Temple and Haeinsa Temple. On the final day, they paid homage to the Janggyeong Panjeon at Haeinsa Temple and held a dedication ceremony at the Geumganggyedan Stairs of Tongdosa Temple, concluding the three-day pilgrimage.
Seok Gil-am, Dean of the Department of Buddhist Studies, said, "This pilgrimage to the Three Jewel Temples was a living educational experience, allowing students to experience the Buddhist theories they learned in the classroom in a real-world setting." He added, "I hope this will serve as an opportunity for students to establish their identity as members of the Buddhist community and internalize the founding principles of the school."
Shin Jeong-won, a student majoring in Buddhist Studies and a 24th-grade student, said, "The pilgrimage to the Three Jewel Temples deepened my faith. It inspired me to plan more pilgrimage programs in the future. I am also grateful to Jeongjin Corporation, a subsidiary of the school, for their generous support."
