서산 가로림만 '국가해양생태공원' 지정

충남 서산 가로림만이 국내 최초 국가해양생태공원으로 지정되며 글로벌 해양 생태관광 거점으로 성장할 전망이다. 

오는 12월 말 전남 무안·신안, 여자만, 경북 호미반도와 함께 국가 지정 고시를 앞둔 가로림만은 세계적인 생태 보존과 관광 활용의 모델로 주목받고 있다.

국가해양생태공원은 해양 생태계의 보전과 지속 가능한 이용을 위해 국가가 지정하는 특별 구역으로, 가로림만은 점박이물범과 흰발농게 등 다수의 천연기념물 및 멸종위기종 서식지로서 국내 최고 수준의 해양 생태계 부양 능력을 갖췄다. 

2016년 해양생물보호구역으로 지정된 이후 서산시는 국가해양생태공원 조성을 위해 꾸준히 행정력을 집중해 왔다.

서산시는 지역 정치권과 협력해 해양생태계법 개정을 이끌어 내며 국가해양생태공원 지원 근거를 마련했다. 지난해 예비타당성조사에서는 아쉽게 재조사 결정이 있었으나, 서산시와 충남도는 올해에도 1,200억 원 규모로 계획된 예타 대응에 행정력을 집중하고 있다.

향후 사업에는 가로림만 서산갯벌의 세계자연유산 등재 추진, 국가정원 기반 조성, 갯벌 생태길 조성 등 연계 프로그램도 포함된다. 이를 통해 생태 보호와 관광 활성화를 동시에 도모하며 지역 경제에도 이바지할 것으로 기대된다.

서산시 관계자는 “국가해양생태공원 지정은 가로림만의 생태적 가치를 세계적으로 인정받는 계기”라며 “지속 가능한 보전과 지역사회와의 상생을 위한 사업 추진에 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.
