뉴욕에서 활동 중인 지인 음악가 쇼코 나가이(Shoko Nagai)로부터 반가운 메시지를 받았다. 그녀가 전해온 소식은 12월 16일, 뉴욕 브루클린에 있는 ‘룰렛 인터미디엄’에서 열리는 공연 ‘컨템퍼러리 이스트: 카오루 와타나베 -이윤지(Contemporary East: Kaoru Watanabe- Yoon-Ji Lee’에 관한 것이었다.
공연은 뉴욕을 기반으로 동아시아 현대음악의 흐름을 조명해 온 ‘동시대 동아시아 음악’ 시리즈의 하나로 일본 출신 즉흥 음악가 카오루 와타나베의 작품 ‘향(Incense)’과, 구겐하임 펠로우로 선정되었으며 버클리 음악대학 작곡 부문 부교수로 재직하고 있는 한국의 현대 작곡가 이윤지(Yoon-Ji Lee)의 신작이 한 무대에서 나란히 연주되는 프로그램이다.
즉흥과 구조, 전통과 실험, 동아시아의 서로 다른 감각이 교차하는 이 무대는 동시대 음악의 현재를 뉴욕이라는 공간에서 보여주는 공연이다.

이번 무대는 한국과 일본 음악가의 즉흥과 구조, 전통과 실험, 동아시아의 서로 다른 감각이 뉴욕이라는 장소에서 교차한다는 점에서 동시대 음악의 실체를 보여주는 소중한 공연이라 할 수 있다.
특히 이윤지 작곡가는 2024년 구겐하임 펠로우십을 수상하며 국제적으로 주목받고 있는 자랑스러운 음악가로 현재 버클리 음악대학 작곡 부문 부교수로 재직하며 작곡과 교육을 함께 이어가고 있다. 그의 음악이 세계 초연으로 소개되는 이 무대는 한국의 현대음악이 뉴욕의 실험적 음악 공간에서 어떤 언어로 울리는지를 확인할 수 있는 실로 소중한 기회이기도 하다.
공연의 또 하나의 중요한 무대는 연주자로 참여하는 쇼코 나가이와 사토시 다케이시다. 피아노와 아코디언을 오가며 즉흥과 실험을 이끄는 쇼코 나가이, 그리고 타악을 통해 리듬과 시간의 구조를 세우는 사토시 다케이시는 이 무대에서 음악을 연주하는 동시에 동시대 음악의 감각을 함께 ‘옮기는’ 역할을 수행한다.
