[브레이크뉴스=이성용 기자] 육상과 해양의 동식물 등 생물 유래 소재, 즉 '천연물'의 안전성과 품질을 국가 차원에서 총괄 관리할 대한민국 최초의 전문 기관이 경남 양산에 둥지를 틀었다.
경상남도는 17일 오후 3시, 부산대학교 양산캠퍼스 첨단산학단지에서 ‘천연물안전관리연구원’ 준공식을 개최하고 본격적인 가동에 들어갔다고 밝혔다. 이번 연구원 개소는 ‘글로벌 천연물 산업의 표준’을 정립하는 핵심 기지로 도약했음을 의미한다.
천연물안전관리연구원은 국비 286억 원 등 총 341억 원이 투입된 대규모 국책 사업의 결실이다. 연면적 5,315㎡ 규모에 지상 3층·지하 1층으로 지어진 이 공간은 대한민국 천연물 소재의 '주민등록증'과 '건강검진'을 책임지는 역할을 수행한다.
천연물안전관리연구원은 국내외 천연물 소재의 안전성 평가 및 품질관리 기준 마련, 고난도 시험·분석 지원, 관련 기업의 글로벌 진출을 위한 교두보를 마련했다. 최첨단 실험실과 연구실을 갖추고 있어, 천연물 원료가 완제품으로 탄생하기까지 전 과정을 과학적으로 뒷받침한다.

이어 “경남도는 양산을 바이오메디컬 산업의 중심지로 육성하기 위해 부산대학교를 중심으로 연구·의료·산업이 연계된 핵심 거점 조성에 힘쓰고 있다”며 “천연물안전관리연구원을 시작으로 바이오메디컬 인공지능(AI) 연구 기반까지 단계적으로 구축해, 이 일대가 경남을 넘어 대한민국 바이오메디컬 산업을 선도하는 허브로 성장하도록 적극 지원하겠다”고 강조했다.
