단순한 교통 요충지를 넘어 천안 KTX역세권 일대가 중부권 미래 산업을 이끌 ‘거점 도시’로 체질 개선에 나선다.
충남 천안시는 불당동과 아산시 탕정면을 잇는 ‘천안·아산 KTX역세권 R&D 집적지구’를 제조 R&D와 MICE 산업이 공존하는 비즈니스 융복합 거점으로 고도화하겠다고 6일 밝혔다.
총 68만㎡ 규모로 조성되는 이번 사업은 중부권 최대 규모의 R&D 프로젝트다. 천안시는 단순히 건물을 짓는 것을 넘어, 연구개발(R&D) 성과가 즉각 사업화로 이어지는 ‘선순환 경제 생태계’ 구축에 사활을 걸고 있다.
그간 충남도, 아산시, LH 등과 긴밀히 협력해온 천안시는 2026년을 사업 가속화의 원년으로 삼았다. 이미 2023년 충남지식산업센터와 지난해 제조기술융합센터가 차례로 문을 열며 제조 혁신과 인재 양성을 위한 기초 체력을 확보했다.
변화의 핵심은 2027년 준공 예정인 충남국제전시컨벤션센터다. 이 센터가 완공되면 기업 간 교류, 투자 유치, 오픈 이노베이션을 잇는 강력한 플랫폼 역할을 수행하며 R&D 결과물을 시장으로 연결하는 가교가 될 전망이다.
천안시는 KTX역세권의 탁월한 접근성을 활용해 △부지 조성 △특구 운영 △기업 입주 공간 △전시·컨벤션 △제조기술 R&D △국책기관 유치 등 6개 핵심 과제를 동시에 추진한다.
특히 입주 기업이 연구개발부터 실증 테스트, 투자 유치, 판로 개척까지 한 권역 내에서 해결할 수 있도록 설계했다. 이는 혁신 기술이 곧바로 수익으로 연결되는 ‘도시형 R&D 생태계’를 지향한다.
집적지구의 외연도 넓어진다. 천안시는 컨벤션센터 주변에 호텔과 연구시설을 입체적으로 배치하는 ‘MICE 확장형 비즈니스 단지’를 구상 중이다.
아울러 국립치의학연구원 설립과 연계해 AI 의료기술, 라이프케어 로봇 등 미래 의료 신산업을 육성하고 이를 의료관광까지 연결하는 특화 전략을 세웠다.
방문객의 편의를 위해 KTX 천안아산역에서 집적지구까지 이어지는 약 890m 구간의 도보 통로 조성도 추진된다. 완공 시 역에서 주요 시설까지 10분 이내 이동이 가능해져 역세권 특유의 기동성을 확보하게 된다.
