[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 부산시 교육감 선거 출마를 준비했던 전호환 전 부산대 총장이 건강 문제와 도의적 책임, 가족 의견을 들어 불출마의사를 밝혔다.
전호환 전 총장은 7일 부산 시민들에게 보낸 입장문에서 "깊은 고민 끝에 이번 선거 출마를 접기로 했다"고 밝혔다. 그는 부산대 교수·총장, 동명대 총장, 국가교육회의 위원 등 오랜 교육 현장 경험을 살려 AI 시대 부산 교육 발전에 기여하고자 했으나 여러 이유로 뜻을 접었다.
건강 회복 우선
첫째 이유로 건강 문제를 꼽았다. 지난해 운동 중 부상으로 수술을 받은 뒤 회복 중이었으나 최근 통증 재발로 의사로부터 충분한 휴식과 안정이 필요하다는 소견을 들었다. "교육감이라는 막중한 책무를 위해 건강이 뒷받침돼야 한다"고 강조했다.
동명대 사건 책임 인정
둘째, 동명대학교 관련 사건에 대한 도의적 책임을 들었다. 본인은 무혐의 처분을 받았지만 함께 일한 동료들이 사법적 판단을 앞둔 상황을 무겁게 받아들이고 있다. "총장으로서 범죄 관단과 별개로 교육자로서 책임을 다해야 한다"며 동료 지원을 우선하기로 했다.
가족 만류 존중
셋째, 가족의 만류를 존중했다. 건강과 주변 상황을 가장 가까이서 지켜본 가족들이 출마를 걱정하며 말렸다는 것이다. "공직은 시민 앞에 끝까지 책임질 수 있는 자리"라며 출마 강행이 옳지 않다고 판단했다.
전 전 총장은 "부산 교육 미래를 위해 경험과 철학을 펼치고자 했던 뜻이 간절했지만 개인 의지만으로 감당할 수 없다"고 밝혔다. 앞으로 지역사회 봉사와 교육 철학 전파에 힘쓰겠다는 다짐이다. 그동안 성원해준 시민들에게 감사와 송구의 마음을 전했다.

Jeon Ho-hwan, former Busan University president and a leading contender for Busan education superintendent, announced he will not run, pointing to health issues, moral responsibility, and family concerns.
In a statement to Busan citizens on April 7, Jeon said he had deeply considered withdrawing from the upcoming election. With his extensive background as a Busan National University professor and president, Dongmyeong University president, and member of national education committees, he had aimed to contribute to Busan education in the AI era but decided against it for several reasons.
Health Recovery First
Jeon cited health as his primary reason. He underwent surgery last year for an injury sustained during exercise and, despite recovery efforts, recently experienced renewed pain. His doctor advised sufficient rest and stability, leading him to conclude that his health must support such a demanding role.
Acknowledges Dongmyeong University Incident Responsibility
Second, he addressed moral responsibility over the Dongmyeong University incident. Though personally cleared with no charges, he feels a heavy burden as some colleagues who worked with him face impending legal judgments. As former president, he stated that aiding them takes precedence over running, separate from any criminal involvement.
Respects Family's Wishes
Third, he chose to honor his family's opposition. Those closest to him, who have witnessed his health struggles and circumstances, urged him not to run out of concern. He emphasized that public office demands full accountability to citizens, making a forced candidacy irresponsible.
Jeon noted the decision was not easy, given his passion to apply his experience and philosophy for Busan's educational future. Moving forward, he plans to serve the community humbly and share his educational insights where needed. He expressed deep gratitude to supporters and regret for not meeting expectations.
