자연이 품은 생명의 근원을 승화된 회화예술로 펼쳐가는 중견 서양화가 이혜순 작가의 전시가 국내와 파리에서 함께 열렸다. 국내 전시는 지난 2월 15일 서울 예술의 전당 한가람 디자인미술관에서 오픈되어 2월 26일까지 열리는 추상 작가 3인 전시인 ‘뷰티 인 그레이스’(Beauty In Grace)에 차정숙 이상훈 작가와 함께 초대되었다. 이 전시는 전시 기획사 ‘제뉴인글로벌컴퍼니’가 추상미술을 추구하는 작가 중 작품성이 깊은 울림을 담고 있는 3인의 아티스트를 선정하여 열린 전시다. '열정, 그 아름다운 에너지’라는 부제 속에 각 작가의 승화된 예술혼을 선보이고 있다.
서울 예술의 전당 전시에 40여 점의 작품을 출품한 이혜순 작가는 그중 금속인 백동판(白銅板)과 은판(銀板)을 재료로 그려낸 금속 회화 작품과 다양한 보석류의 원석들을 콜라주 작업한 금속 회화 공예작품 20여 점을 선보였다.
이와 같은 이혜순 작가의 금속공예 작품들은 작가 특유의 집중력이 끝없이 녹아내린 작업으로 자연과 문명이라는 깊은 의식으로 빚어낸 작품들이다. 작가는 이와 같은 회화와 금속공예가 접목된 작품을 통하여 자연과 문명은 대립이 아닌 동행이라는 의식을 제시하였다. 작가는 오랜 역사 동안 보석에 담긴 불변의 빛깔을 영원한 가치로 품어온 사실을 깊게 인식하여 자연과 문명은 영원한 동행이라는 메시지를 담아낸 것이다. 이와 같은 깊은 울림을 담은 작품들은 전시가 오픈되면서 대형 작품을 포함한 4점의 작품이 컬렉터들에게 판매되어 완성도가 높은 승화된 예술은 어려운 시대 상황 속에서도 바른 평가를 받는 사실을 일깨웠다.
이혜순 작가는 국내 전시 개막에 이어 프랑스 파리로 건너가 초대 개인전을 현지시간 19일 오픈하였다. 파리 7구 바렌에 소재한 모나리자 갤러리(Mona Lisa Galerie) 초대로 2월 29일까지 열리게 된 파리 전시에는 순수회화 작품과 금속공예 작품 30여 점이 전시되었다, 전시회 베르니사주(vernissage-오픈식)에 참석한 프랑스 주요 미술 관계자와 비평가들은 이혜순 작가의 금속공예와 회화가 어우러진 작품에 깊은 관심을 보였다.
프랑스 파리 모나리자 갤러리 이사벨 로믹(Isabelle Romic) 관장은 SNS를 통하여 전시 오픈식에 참석한 현지 관람객들이 자연의 생명에 담긴 의식을 섬세한 추상적 조형으로 매만진 이혜순 작가의 작품에 찬사를 아끼지 않았다는 사실을 전하였다. 특히 금속 공예와 순수 회화가 어우러진 작품에 깊은 관심을 보였다고 한다.

1986년 이화여자 대학 서양화과를 졸업한 이혜순 작가는 파주 DMZ 지대와 인접한 자연 생태계가 고스란히 보존된 오지의 작업실에서 작품에 전념하며 다양한 실험적 작업을 시도하여왔다. 이처럼 신성한 생명의 호흡을 일상처럼 매만져온 작가는 오랫동안 자연의 시각적인 감성이 아닌 자연을 머금은 숨결과 같은 작품을 선보여 왔다.
이와 같은 깊은 의식을 품고 매만져온 작가의 작품은 자연의 모세혈관과 같은 섬세한 형태들이 추상화된 언어가 되어 겹겹의 빛깔 속에 살아있다. 이는 자연의 실체적인 형태의 사실성을 단순하게 작가의 내면에서 여과시킨 것이 아니다. 이는 소중한 자연의 숨결을 예술로 승화시키려는 의식에서 생성된 놀라운 집중력이 빚어낸 결과이다. 이와 같은 맥락은 작가의 작품이 일차적인 시각에서 꽃이라는 추상으로 다가오지만, 작품 속에 겹겹으로 들어 있는 기호화된 언어를 해체하여 보면 실로 경이로운 섬세한 이야기들이 층층으로 누워있음을 살피게 된다.
작가의 작품을 세밀하게 해체하여 보면 태초의 자연이 생성되기 이전인 카오스(Chaos) 세계를 작품의 바탕으로 삼고 있다. 이와 같은 작가의 작품은 마치 모세혈관처럼 그어댄 선 위에 새살이 돋아나면 다시 그어 간 숱하게 반복된 선들이 층층으로 중첩되어있다. 이를 감싸고 있는 질감과 빛깔로 빚어낸 신성한 생명의 숨결이 살아 있다. 이와 같은 각고의 작품이 완성되어 가는 과정은 자연을 노래한 한편의 서사시와 같다. 바로 생명과 치유의 노래이다.
이처럼 생명과 치유의 노래로 흐르는 작가의 작품은 산고와 같은 숭고한 통증과 동행하고 있다. 작가의 작품이 탄생하는 과정을 작품에서 살펴보면 자연이라는 몸에 피가 흐르고 살이 돋아나 마침내 숨결이 흐른다. 이어 이름 없는 낮은 풀잎들이 여린 아가의 숨결처럼 아등바등 곳곳에 싹을 틔운다. 이어서 크고 작은 나무가 자라고 온갖 꽃이 흐드러지게 피어난다. 이와 같은 바탕에서 가픈 숨을 토하며 자연의 맨살을 기어오르는 크고 작은 곤충이 그려진다. 이와 같은 자연의 숨결에 귀를 세워 예쁜 빛깔에 고운 음성을 가진 새들을 찾아보면 냉큼 삼켜버린 몇 마리의 곤충이 사라진 자리에 한 줄의 깊은 빛깔이 비명으로 그려져 있다. 이렇게 많은 손길과 붓질이 엉켜 들었지만, 놀랍게도 작가의 작품은 너무나 평화로운 감성이 느껴진다.
이처럼 이혜순 작가의 순수 회화 작품이거나 금속공예 작품에 담긴 의식의 주요한 관점은 생명의 신성함이다. 작가 스스로 고독한 작업을 통한 그려내고 매만지는 과정과 정신 속에서 자연을 벗어나 존재할 수 없는 생명의 신성함을 작가 스스로 일깨운 것이다. 이와 같은 생명의 신성함을 일깨워가는 소통을 통하여 자연에 담긴 균형의 소중함을 인식하게 되면서 자연과의 동행이라는 메시지를 담은 생명의 노래가 빚어지게 되는 것이다.
또한, 작가의 순수회화와 금속 공예가 어우러진 작품은 자연의 신성한 숨결을 통한 치유의 메시지를 담고 있다. 이는 작가 스스로 기초 작업인 금속판을 새겨가는 흠집을 통하여 훼손이라는 아픔의 실체를 인식하게 되는 과정이다. 이와 같은 아픔을 매만지는 작가의 손길은 마치 정강이를 으깨어온 딸아이의 상처를 매만지듯 따뜻하고 포근한 빛깔로 찢겨나간 맨살의 상처를 감싼다. 이어 저마다의 고유한 빛깔로 오랜 세월을 풍화한 보석류의 원석을 콜라주한 오브제 작업은 단순한 치유를 넘어 새로운 탄생을 소망하고 있다.
이와 같은 작가의 숭고한 작업으로 녹아내린 순수회화와 금속공예가 어우러진 작품은 훼손되고 그릇된 것들에 대한 치유라는 깊은 울림의 메시지를 품고있다. 필자는 이와 같은 작가의 작품에 대하여 살펴오면서 금속재료를 활용하는 사실과 공예를 접목하는 작가의 인식과 의식에 대하여 많은 사실을 알 수 있었다. 작가는 오늘날 우리가 인류사를 석기시대와 청동기시대 그리고 철기시대로 분별하는 바탕이 덴마크의 시인과 의사이며 역사학자인 베델 시몬센(1780-1858)에 의하여 이루어졌음을 분명하게 헤아린 깊은 내공을 가진 작가였다.
이에 전설과 같은 선사시대에서부터 인류 최초로 자연 상태에서 얻게 된 구리금속의 역사이거나 고대에 주석의 합금으로 얻어낸 청동의 역사를 거쳐 중세시대에 비금속을 인공적 수단으로 귀금속으로 바꾸려는 오랜 염원의 몸부림이었던 연금술 시대를 거쳐 르네상스 시대에 이탈리아 야금 기술자 반노초 비링구초(Vannoccio Biringuccio. 1480-1539)에 의하여 광석에서 금속을 추출하여 정련하는 야금술(metallurgy)이 정립되면서 오늘날 현대 문명을 가능케 한 철강 시대가 열리게 된 금속의 역사를 분명하게 헤아리고 있었다. 이와 같은 깊은 의식으로 빚어낸 신성한 생명과 치유의 메시지를 담은 예술혼의 노래 이혜순 작가의 작품이 예술의 본고장 프랑스 파리 전시를 통하여 깊숙하게 소통되어 바른 평가가 이루어질 것이다.

The song of life as created by harmony of pure arts and metal crafts
The arts exhibition of Hye-Soon Lee , a leading western artist , who has expanded the scope her artistic philosophy , expressing the origin of life in nature through sublimated painting and art ,was held together in Korea and Paris.
The domestic exhibition was invited with two artists, Cha Jung-Sook and Lee Sang-Hoon to Beauty in Grace, an exhibition of thee abstract artists , which was opened at the Seoul Arts Center Hangaram Design Musuem on February 15 and will be held by February 26. This exhibition is held by Genius international Company, an exhibition company, which selects three artists whose works are deeply echoed among artists pursuing abstract art. The sublimated art-soul of each art is presented under the subtitle of ‘ Passion-the beautiful Artistic Energy’
Artist Lee exhibited together her 20 metal painting works which white copperplate and silver plate were used as materials as well as 20 metal painting and crafts works that various kinds of rough gemstones were used for creative design at this exhibition of the Korea Art Center.
Artist Lee’s metal crafts works were created with her own artistic respect of harmony of the nature and civilization through artistic progress that artist’s unique concentration were endlessly melted into the works. She tried to present her own artistic philosophy that both the nature and civilization have not opposed relations , but combination each other through her works.
In addition, she not only deeply recognized the fact that the immutable colors penetrated into jewels for long times were permanently high valued , but also conveyed the message that the nature and civilization are eternal companions .
As the exhibitions opened, four works including large scale works were already sold to collectors who felt interested in her works, and her works aroused our consciousness that the sublimated art works created in high perfection are necessarily appraised as excellent works although today the criteria of evaluation of art works is confused .
After the opening of the domestic exhibition for two weeks, artist Lee went to Paris , France to open her first solo exhibition on the 19th. The Paris exhibition , which was held by February 29 at the invitation of the Mona Lisa Gallery , where located at 7th district of Paris, introduced to the world 30 works composed of fine paintings and metal crafts . One of France’s leading art officials and renowned critics showed a deep interest in Lee’s works harmonized with both creative metal crafts and refined skillful paintings.
Isabella Romic, director of the Mona Risa Gallery in Paris, France , express her notes via SNS that the local visitors who attended the opening ceremony paid tribute to the works of artist, Lee Hye- Soon , who expressed the consciousness of nature’s life with delicate abstract forms . Particularly she said that they put a deep interest on the works that combined metal crafts with pure paintings.
Artist Lee , who graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Ewha Woman’s University in 1986, has tried various experimental, Works by concentrating on her works in the Oji Nature Studio, where the ecosystem adjacent to Paju DMZ area keeps preserved. This artist who has touched the breath of divine life in the nature as usual, has long exhibited real works breathing with nature, not the visual emotion of nature.
Her works created on the base of such deep artistic philosophy are living in layers of colors as the language abstracted from delicate forms such as capillaries of the nature , This is not simply filtering within her consciousness the real features of the nature as it is.
This is the result of the amazing concentration created by the consciousness of sublimating the precious breath of the nature into art. In this context, the artist’s works approached abstraction of flowers from the primary point of view , but the symbolic language contained in the works , when it is disassembled , shows how wonderfully detailed stories lay in layers.
When this artist’s works are dismantled in detail, the works are rooted from the chaos world before the creation of the original nature . This artist’s works, like capillaries , have a breath of scarced life created b texture and colors superimposed on many repeated layers, when new life rises on the line. The process of completing each of these works is like an epic while singing nature. It is a song of life and healing soul .
The process of birth of the artist’s works flowing through both the songs of life and healing soul are accompanied by a noble pain like birth. If you take a closer look at the artist’s creation progress of her works , blood flows to the body of the nature and the flesh is sprouting ,and finally the breath flows. Subsequently, an unnamed low blade of grass sprouts around the back of the bar, like the breath of a young baby . Finally , large and small trees grow, and all kinds of flowers bloom. Then big and small insects are drawn, breathing out short breaths and climbing up the skin of nature. If you look for birds with a beautiful voice , you can see a line of deep colors screaming in the place where some insects that have swallowed up are gone.

Although so many touches and brush strokes are intertwined, surprisingly, the artist’s works get felt so peaceful.
Thus, the main point of view of Artist Lee’s pure paintings or rituals contained in metal works is the sacredness of life. The artist herself awakened to the sacredness of life that can’t exist outside of the nature in the progress and sprit of painting and touching through lonesome works. Through communication that awakens the sacredness of life, we realize the importance of balance in the nature , and the song of life containing the message of walking together with the nature is born .
Additionally, the artist’s works of pure painting and metal crafts contain a message of healing soul through the divine breath of the nature. This is the process by which the artist recognizes the reality of the pains of damage through scratches on the metal plate, which is the basic work. The touch by the artist who touch’s such pains wraps up the wound of bare skin that is torn in warm and warm color as if touching the wound of the her daughter who crushed the shin. Next, the collage work, which objets gemstones that have been weathered with their own unique colors for many years, hopes for a new birth beyond simple healing soul.
The combination of pure painting and metal crafts melted by the artist’s sublime work is a work of clear conscious message of healing of damaged and wrong things. As I looked at this artist’s works, I have been persistently rude to explore the facts of using metal materials and the rituals that artists recognize and pursue. Many facts that have to be revered . The writer was a deep -minded one who clearly understands that today we have distinguished human history from the Stone Age , The Broze Age, and the Iron Age by the Danish poet , physician, and historian Vedel Simonsen.
This is the alchemy era that has been a long standing desire to convert, No metals into precious metals by artificial means through the history, Of copper metals obtained from legendary prehistoric times, the first in human nature, or the history of bronze obtained from an alloy of tin in ancient times. In the Renaissance, Italian metallurgist Vannoccio Bringguccio( 1480-1539) established the metallurgy of extracting and refining metals from ores, opening the era of steel that made modern civilization possible. The history of metal was clearly counted. The song of artist Lee Hye-Soon , which contains the message of sacred life and healing soul ctreated by such deep consciousness , will be communicated in depth through the exhibition of Paris ,France, the home art.
