1960년대까지만 해도 한국은 철강산업의 불모지였다. 포항제철은 1968년에 창사(創社)됐다. 박태준 초대회장이 포항의 해변가에 제철소 터를 닦고 제철소 공장을 만들었다. 일본의 자금 지원-기술 지원이 창사의 힘이었다. 이런 가난했던 국가의 철강기업으로 출발했던 포스코의 성장은 경이적이다. 세계 제철사(製鐵史)를 다시 썼다. 왜냐, 포스코는 창사 이래 최고의 실적을 기록했다. 또한 ‘세계에서 가장 경쟁력 있는 철강사’ 12년 연속 1위를 했다.
포스코가 지난 11월9일 내놓은 “포스코, ‘세계에서 가장 경쟁력 있는 철강사’ 12년 연속 1위” 제하의 보도자료에 따르면, 글로벌 철강전문 분석기관 WSD가 지난 11월 8일 발표한 전 세계 35개 철강사 대상 23개 항목 평가에서 '기술혁신, 재무건전성, 고부가가치제품, 인적역량' 항목에서 만점 평가를 받았다,
이에 대해 포스코측은 “세계적인 철강전문 분석기관 WSD(World Steel Dynamics)는 미국 현지 시각으로 11월 8일(월)부터 9일(화)까지 이틀간 마이애미에서 열리는 ‘제36차 글로벌 철강 전략회의(Steel Success Strategies)’에서 글로벌 철강사 경쟁력 평가 결과를 발표하며 포스코를 세계 최고 철강회사로 선정했다”고 전하고 “포스코는 고부가가치제품, 가공비용, 기술혁신, 인적역량, 신성장사업, 투자환경, 국가위험요소 등 7개 항목에서 2년 연속 만점을 받은 데 이어 올해에는 2018년 최정우 포스코그룹 회장 취임 이래 강조해온 미래성장동력을 위한 선제적 시재확보, 부채비율 감소 활동 등을 통한 재무건전성 항목 또한 만점을 기록하며 8.54점(10점 만점)으로 종합 1위에 올랐다. 1999년 설립된 WSD는 매년 전 세계 주요 35개 철강사들을 대상으로 23개 항목을 평가하고 이를 종합한 경쟁력 순위를 발표해 오고 있다. 이 순위는 글로벌 주요 철강사들의 경영 실적과 향후 발전가능성을 가늠하는 중요한 참고지표가 된다.”고 소개했다.
이어 “포스코는 지난해 코로나19 사태로 인한 글로벌 철강 수요산업 침체로 유례없는 경영위기를 겪었으나 지난 3분기 연결기준 매출 20조 6천억 원, 영업이익 3조 1천억 원을 기록하며 1968년 창사 이후 최고 실적을 기록했다.”고 덧붙였다.
오늘날 포스코의 글로벌 강자 진입(進入)은 박태준 포항제철 창업회장의 공로가 끼친바 크다고 하겠다. 그 뒤를 이어 현재 회장인 최정우 회장의 코로나19 비상시대에 따른 탁월한 경영 리더십도 한몫 했다. 근년 들어 포스코는 친환경 철강 제품 판매 강화, 이차전지소재 및 수소사업 확대 ᄃᅠᆼ 친환경 소재 전문 메이커로 사업구조를 전환해왔다. 그 중심에 최정우 회장이 있었다.
포스코는 이와 관련 “철강사업의 경우 지난해 874만 톤이던 고부가가치 WTP(World Top Premium) 제품을 올해 930만 톤까지 판매 확대하고, 최근 기가스틸 100만 톤 생산체제를 구축했으며 ‘이노빌트(INNOVILT)’, ‘이 오토포스(e Autopos)’, ‘그린어블(Greenable)’등 친환경 브랜드를 잇달아 론칭하는 등 친환경 프리미엄 제품 판매기반을 강화했다”면서 “지난 HyIS포럼에는 전 세계 48개국 348개 기업 및 기관에서 총 2,028명의 인원이 온•오프라인으로 참가했다. 포스코 고유의 친환경 수소환원제철 모델인 HyREX(Hydrogen Reduction Steelmaking) 기술을 세계 철강업계에 최초로 선보여 기술적 가치와 경쟁력을 인정받았으며 전 세계 철강업계의 국제적 연대와 협력을 이끌어 냈다는 점에서 큰 호응을 얻은 바 있다.”고, 내부의 사정을 알린다.
철강업계는 “포스코의 최정우 회장이 지난 10월 철강업계 최초로 수소환원 제철 기술을 논의하는 수소환원 제철 국제포럼(이하 HyIS포럼)을 성공적으로 주최하는 등 세계 철강업계의 탄소중립 실현을 위한 협력 방안을 주도해 나가고 있는 점에서도 긍정적인 평가를 받았다”면서 “최정우 회장이 지난 10월 세계철강협회(worldsteel) 회장단에 선임되었고, 제12회 스틸리 어워드(Steelie Awards)에서도 ‘기술혁신’, ‘커뮤니케이션 프로그램’ 등 2개 부문에서 수상하는 등 세계 최고의 경쟁력을 가진 철강사로 인정받고 있다”고 소개하고 있다.

포스코 최정우 회장은 올 신년사를 통해 “지난 2020년은 예기치 못한 코로나19 영향으로 전 세계가 사회적, 경제적으로 큰 어려움을 겪었다. 포스코도 전례 없는 위기를 경험했다. 당면한 난관을 극복하기 위해 회사는 선제적으로 비상경영을 추진하여 시장 상황에 기민하게 대응하는 유연 생산 판매 체제로 전환하고, 현금흐름 중시 경영과 극한적인 비용 절감을 통해 단기간 내에 판매 부진을 만회하고 수익성을 회복할 수 있었다. 또한 그룹의 미래 핵심 성장 동력인 양·음극재 생산능력을 증대시키고 아르헨티나 염호 리튬 상업생산을 준비하는 등 이차전지 소재사업을 가속화하는 한편, LNG, 식량사업 확대와 더불어 그룹 역량을 기반으로 한 중장기 수소 사업화 로드맵을 수립했다”고 진단한 후 ”우리가 빠르게 위기를 극복하고 미래를 준비할 수 있었던 것은 나보다 회사의 어려움을 먼저 생각하고 기업시민 포스코가 꿈꾸는 내일을 향해 희생과 노력을 마다하지 않은 포스코 그룹과 협력사 임직원 여러분들이 있었기 때문“이라고 강조, 포스코의 미래비전을 제시했다.
