인천시는 2024년 개관을 앞둔 국립인천해양박물관의 다양한 유물기증을 위한 시민참여 확산 운동의 일환으로, 해양수산부에서 매월 선정하는 ‘이달의 해양유물’을 소개하고 있다.
7월의 해양유물로는 조선 후기 궁중장식화인 〈요지연도 8폭 병풍〉이 선정됐다.
‘요지연도’는 중국 고대 전설에 등장하는 서왕모(西王母)가 신선들의 땅인 곤륜산(崑崙山) 요지(瑤池)에서 연회를 베푸는 모습을 그린 그림이다.
주로 병풍 그림으로 제작됐으며, 일반적인 화면 구성은 흥겨운 잔치의 모습과 잔치에 초대받은 신선들이 육지, 하늘 그리고 바다를 건너 연회장에 모여드는 두 장면으로 이루어져 있다.
화면의 절반을 바다 배경으로 채운 조선시대 가장 대표적인 해양 소재의 회화작품이다.
‘요지연도’는 불로장생(不老長生)의 의미를 담고 있어 국가와 왕조의 오랜 번영을 염원하는 바람으로 조선 후기 왕실에서 제작했다.
특히, 가로 넓이가 무려 4m가 넘는 대형 병풍으로 조선 후기 궁중장식화의 위용을 보여주는 작품이다.
