지난 6월 인도에서 처음 보고된 BA.2.75 변이는 그리스 신화의 반인반마(半人半馬)의 괴물 켄타우로스(Centaurus)로 부르고 있다. 이는 세계 우세종으로 자리한 BA.5에 이은 새로운 변이 BA.2.75가 동물과 사람을 전전하며 변이된 상황을 의미한 것이다.
늦은 봄에서부터 초여름까지 남쪽 하늘에서 볼 수 있는 켄타우루스 별이 있다. 이는 신화에서 유래한 별자리 별로 우주에서 3번째로 밝은 별이다.
하늘에서 볼 수 있는 가장 밝은 별은 청백색의 별 시리우스이다. 다음으로 밝은 별이 카노푸스 별이다. 카노푸스 별은 대기층에 의해 푸른 빛을 잃어 붉은 별로 보이며 동양의 오랜 역사에서는 유난히도 이 별이 잘 보이지 않았던 까닭에 인간의 수명을 관장하는 별로 받들어 노인성(老人星) 으로 기록하였다. 토정비결을 저술한 조선 시대 학자 토정 이지함(1517~1578)은 모두가 이 별을 보기 원했다는 기록을 남겼다. 이지함 자신도 별의 관측을 위해 한라산을 세 번이나 등정하였지만, 그의 수명은 환갑이었다.
최초의 별자리로 등장한 켄타우루스는 그리스 신화에서 반인반마의 거인(괴물)으로 인간과 짐승이 함께한 종족의 조상이다. 이러한 신화에는 많은 이야기가 존재한다.
