한국경제신문 건너편 서소문(서울시 서대문구 합동 21-7)로 길에 친근한 계단을 몇 오르면 인터넷 매체인 브레이크뉴스의 사옥이 자리하고 있다. 1997년 창간된 주간신문인 '주간현대', 1998년에 창간된 '사건의 내막' 산실이기도 하다.
급변하는 시대에 주눅이 든 전통 회화를 거머쥔 강금복 화가가 목포에서 상경했다. 우리의 것을 그려내는 문창수 화가도 뵈었다.
브레이크뉴스 사옥은 일제 강점기에 건축되었던 건물이다. 두 건물이 앙증맞은 구름다리로 연결되어 잠시 도심의 번잡함을 내려놓게 한다. 오랜 세월을 품은 건물을 상징하듯 건축 당시 천장 전기선을 고정하였던 하얀 사기 애자(礙子)가 고스란히 남아 아득한 기억을 소환한다.
손가락을 두 번 접어도 부족한 숫자의 사무실로 이루어진 미로처럼 엉킨 내부는 영화 위대한 개츠비에 등장한 뉴포트비치의 저택과 비슷한 숫자의 룸이지만, 느낌은 예술 아지트이다.
문 대표가 오랜 세월 동안 수집한 500여점의 누드화 중 수백 점이 넘는 작품들이 모든 공간의 사무실 벽과 복도는 물론 화장실에도 걸려 있었다.
문일석 대표의 누드화 수집에 대한 철학이 심중하다. 세계적인 부의 상징인 미국의 록펠러 패밀리가 대를 이어 걸어두고 경영철학으로 삼아온 작품이 누드화라는 것이다. 이는 누구나 맨몸으로 태어나 치열하게 살지만, 모든 것을 벗어두고 떠나는 삶에 대한 교훈이라는 헤아림이었다.

록펠러 가문에 대한 필자의 상식으로 유추하면 18세기 초 독일에서 미국으로 이주했다. 미국에서 스탠더드 오일 기업을 세워 석유왕으로 역사에 남은 존 D 록펠러(1839~1937), 시니어 존 록펠러이다. 이어 그의 막내아들 존 D. 록펠러 주니어(1874~1960)는 미국 브라운 대학에서 다양한 분야를 공부하였지만, 예술학으로 졸업했다.
그의 부인 애비 앨드리치 록펠러(1874~1948)는 현대미술의 가장 주요한 후원자였다. 민속 미술에도 깊은 인식을 가지고 있었다. 그녀는 특히 필자가 일전에 언급한 화가 반 고흐의 슬픔을 깊게 인식한 여인으로 뉴욕 현대 미술관(MoMA) 공동 설립자 중 한 명이었다.
이들 부부의 차남인 넬슨 록펠러(1908~1979)는 49대 뉴욕 주지사를 지낸 인물로 민속 미술에 깊은 의식을 가졌던 어머니(애비 앨드리치 록펠러)의 뜻을 받들어 1954년 원시미술관을 설립했다. 그는 특히 피카소의 1905년 작품 (꽃바구니를 든 소녀)를 소장한 미국 문학가이며 미술 수집가였던 거트루드 스타인(1874~1946)이 세상을 떠난 후 1968년 화제의 작품이 경매에 등장하면서 이를 매입했다.

참고로 이 작품은 거트루드 스타인의 동생 레오가 30달러에 구입한 작품이었다. 또한, 문학가 거트루드 스타인은 1926년 헤밍웨이가 발표한 소설 (해는 또다시 떠오른다) 서문을 쓴 작가이다. 당시 서문에서 (당신들은 모두 잃어버린 세대입니다)라는 말을 남기면서 세계 제1차 대전 이후 젊은 세대들에게는 전쟁의 폐허로 꿈도 희망도 없다는 뜻으로 시대를 관통한 (잃어버린 세대)라는 말이 생겨난 사실도 짚고 가자!
