세상을 살아오면서 몇 번의 '가위눌림'을 경험했다. 가위눌림이란, 잠을 자는데 악귀(惡鬼)가 나를 꽉 누르는 것을 의미한다. 가위눌림을 당하면, 옴짝거리지 못하고 당하고 있게 된다. 가위눌림 상태는 공평하지 않다.
주간신문 언저리의 기자-편집국장-발행인으로 일관한 나는 세상의 변두리에서, 들판에 풀어 놓아진 말처럼 좌충우돌(左衝右突)하며 살아왔다. 이 글은 내 삶의 수필적(隨筆的) 접근이다. 자판 두들기는 대로 써본 글이다.
2020년 년 초부터 시작된 코로나19 시국은 괴질이 2년8개월을 장악하면서 세상을 개판(改版)했다. 업종에 따라, 세상의 질서가 확 뒤바뀐 분야도 있다. 철옹성 같이 견고한 것 같아도, 흐물흐물 붕괴된 부분도 있다. 구축됐던 성공의 성곽들이 멸망지경으로 내몰려 허물어졌다.
코로나19라는 괴이한 질병의 균은 비자도 없이 자유로이 국경을 넘나들면서, 전 세계 인류의 건강에 타격을 줬지만, 기업의 기존질서도 와르르 허물어뜨렸다. 코로나19는 '괴질=죽음'이라는 위협적인 것을 무기로, 인류를 겁박했으며 기존의 사업체를 무너뜨렸다. 새로운 질서를 구축해 나갔다.
뒤돌아보면 필자와도 경쟁해온 경쟁자가 분명코 있었을 것이다. 그러나 잘 드러나지는 않았다. 경쟁자들이 선의가 아닌 '가위눌림' 형태로 나를 대했다면? 이는 불공평이다. 필자가 발행해왔던 ‘일간 펜 그리고 자유(전국 일간신문)’의 직장 폐쇄가 그랬다. 한국 언론계를 위해서라도 몹시 아쉬운 직장 폐쇄였다.

경마장의 말들은 상호 속도의 우열을 가리며, 선두를 차지하려, 뛰고 또 뛴다. 선의(善意)의 경쟁이다. 만약, 보이지 않게 해코지한 세력들이 있었다 해도, 5년마다 거듭된 권력의 수평적 교체와 코로나19 시국에 의한 대변환(大變換)으로 그 실체는 이미 없어졌거나 없어지는 중이리라.
하지만 영화 '매혹의 스캔들(2017년 개봉)'처럼 복수를 위한 경마도 있다. 이 영화의 스토리는, 부친이 살해당하는 장면을 지켜본 소년 에노는 25년 후 복수를 한다. 킨쳄이라는 야생마(野生馬)에 가까운 경주마를 길들여 국제 경마경기에서 승승장구 한다. 부친시절, 화려했던 가문의 명성을 되찾는다. 그리고 아버지를 죽인 나쁜 남자의 딸 클라라와의 허락되지 않은 사랑에 성공한다. 목숨이 걸린 수난의 끝에. 여기에서 경주마 킨쳄이 복수의 핵심 역할을 해준다. 들판을 마음껏 달리려는 야생마의 기질이 높이 그려진다.

요즘, 분꽃이 피는 계절이다. 분꽃은 석양을 지나 어둠이 몰려올 때쯤 피기 시작한다. 여름 날, 시골에 살 때, 어둠이 밀려오면 마당에 모기 불을 피운다. 이 때, 마당 모퉁이에 자란 분꽃이 꽃을 피워 서 있는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 낮에는 태양으로부터 에너지를 비축하기 위해 꽃봉오리를 다물고 있던 분꽃, 드디어 밤이 오자 짙은 어둠과 더불어. 밤이 되면 아름답게, 활짝 꽃을 피우는 게 분꽃이다. 서울 종로구 인사동 산촌 갤러리 1층 중앙에 큰 항아리에 분꽃이 심어져 있다. 짙게 어둠이 몰려올 때라, 짙게 꽃을 피웠다. 분꽃, 밤이 되어서야 꽃을 피웠다. 최부득 박사의 지적처럼, 나의 경쟁자가 어디에 있든지, 그 누구이든지, 그들 역시도 허물어질 것이다. 이 글의 끝에 나의 시 한수를 소개하련다. "이 세상에서/가장 큰 도둑놈은 죽음//그 도둑놈이/나의 모든 것을 훔치고 말겠지.(졸시 '도둑놈'의 전문)" 그러나, 그러나, 코로나19라는 냉엄한 시국의 한 복판에 서서 어둠이 다가와도 꽃을 피우는 분꽃을 묵상하노라.
