고대 엘람 왕국의 오랜 역사가 깃든 오늘날 이란 남서부 후제스탄주의 수사(Susa) 유적지 언덕에는 기원전(BC) 521년에서 (BC) 515년 사이에 건설된 오랜 역사의 (아파다나 성)과 1890년대 후반에 건축된 의문의 (수사 성)과 같은 2개의 성이 있다. 상세하게 살펴보면 많은 이야기가 있다.
기원전(BC) 647년 아시리아 제국의 아슈르바니팔 왕은 엘람 왕국의 수도 수사(susa)를 점령하면서 도시 전체를 참혹하게 파괴하였다. 당시 아시리아 군대는 도시의 참혹한 파괴에 그치지 않고 수많은 분량의 소금을 뿌려 폐허의 땅을 만들었다.

고대 페르시아어에서 요새를 뜻하는 아파다나(𐎠𐎱𐎭𐎠𐎴-Apadāna)의 어원은 도착과 기여 그리고 생산과 같은 여러 의미를 지닌 산스크리트어 아파다나(आपादन)에서 찾게 된다. 이후 고대의 신전과 같은 기둥이 있는 석조 건축을 이르는 하이포스타일 홀 양식의 건축을 나타내는 용어로 발전하였다.
이와 같은 사실에서 오늘날 시대의 주택 아파트(apartment)의 어원에 대하여 짚고 갈 필요가 있다. 아파트는 고대 로마 시대에서부터 존재한 오랜 역사를 가지고 있다. 그러나 오늘날 전 세계가 통용하고 있는 아파트의 어원은 명확하지 않다.
보편적으로 정리되고 있는 아파트의 어원은 다음과 같다. 이탈리아어에서 구분과 분리의 뜻인 아파타레(appartare)를 원형으로 생겨난 아파타민토(appartaménto)가 프랑스어 아파트몽(appartement)과 스페인어 아파르타멘토(apartamento)와 더불어 영어 아파트먼트(apartment)가 되었다는 것이다.
고대 로마 제국 시대에 항구였던 오스티아에 오늘날 아파트와 같은 라틴어로 섬을 뜻하는 인술라(insula) 주택이 즐비하였던 사실에서 아파트의 어원으로 알려진 이탈리아어 아파타레(appartare)가 생겨난 최초의 배경은 물론 설득력 있는 역사적 유래와 실체가 분명하지 않다.
이에 필자는 고대 산스크리트어의 도착과 기여 그리고 생산에서 보살핌에 이르는 여러 의미가 있는 아파다나(आपादन)를 중시한다. 바로 고대 페르시아어에서 기둥이 있는 석조 건축과 요새의 뜻을 품고 있는 아파다나(𐎠𐎱𐎭𐎠𐎴-Apadāna)와 연결되는 까닭이다.
필자의 추정에 의하면 이러한 아파다나는 고대 그리스어에서 곳간(창고)과 가게에 이어 장소의 뜻을 가진 아포테케(αποθήκη)와 깊은 연관성을 가지고 있다. 고대 그리스어 아포테케는 시작을 의미하는 아포(ἀπο-)와 장소를 뜻하는 테스모스(θεσμός)로 이루어진 말이다.
테스모스가 인도 유럽어의 (장소)와 동사 (넣다)를 뜻하는 (dheh₁)에서 유래된 사실도 중요하다. 나아가 고대 그리스어 아포테케가 라틴어에서 창고와 저장소를 뜻하는 아포테카(ăpŏthéca)로 전해진 사실을 중시해야 한다.
