시대의 체온계와 같은 대중가요 트롯의 열기가 뜨겁다. 특히 지난 3년간 유례없는 코로나 팬데믹에서 대중가요 트롯은 공기와 물과 같은 숨결로 우리의 곁에 있었다. 이는 코로나 팬데믹과 함께 출발한 주요 방송사 트롯 경연 인기 프로그램의 영향이 크다.
트롯 경연 프로그램은 이탈리아어로 격년 즉 2년 마다인 뜻에서 출발한 미술 행사 비엔날레처럼 이제 남녀 경연의 해로 분리되었다. 현재 방영 중인 매주 화요일 밤 9시 40분에 방영되는 종편 MBN의 불타는 트롯맨과 매주 목요일 밤 10시에 방영되는 종편 TV 조선의 미스터트롯2는 대표적인 프로그램이다.
지난 17일(화) 방송된 MBN 불타는 트롯맨 5회 경연 1:1 라이벌전에서 경연자 김중연이 보여 준 무대는 놀라웠다. 그가 부른 노래는 시대의 예인 김상국(1934~2006) 가수가 1965년에 불렀던 불나비였다.
김중연은 발라드 적인 감성이 절묘하게 녹아내린 노래와 함께 수준 높은 퍼포먼스를 선보였다. 그는 노래 1절에서 사무치는 그리움의 불길을 찾는 나비의 감성을 유려한 동작의 춤과 독특한 울림을 품은 음색의 시원한 가창력으로 끌어갔다.
이어 간주 중에 설치된 수중 무대에 뛰어들어 불길을 나는 처연한 나비를 형상화한 퍼포먼스는 예술이었다. 이어 시작된 2절의 노래는 가사에 집중한 절제된 동작이 깊은 울림을 고스란히 전달한 예술 트롯을 탄생시킨 무대였다.
필자는 김중연 경연자의 무대를 보며 시대의 예인 고 김상국 가수가 이 무대를 보았더라면 뜨겁게 눈시울을 적셨을 것이라는 생각을 가졌다. 그만큼 김상국 가수에게는 특별한 노래였다. 이에 대하여 살펴보면 많은 이야기가 있다.
불나비 노래는 본디 영화 주제가였다. 조해원 감독 데뷔작으로 김지미, 신영균, 최남현, 박암, 김상국 등이 출연한 미스터리 멜로 영화였다. 빨간 마후라로 잘 알려진 김강윤 작가의 각본으로 그가 작사하여 KBS 경음악단장과 KBS 관현악단장을 지낸 김강섭 작곡가가 곡을 써서 영화에 출연하였던 김상국 가수가 불러 당대의 히트곡이 되었다.
시대의 예인 김상국을 세상에 널리 알린 영원한 노래 불나비는 필자의 생각에 숨은 이야기가 있다. 미스터리 멜로물이었던 영화 불나비 스토리는 노래 불나비 가사에 담긴 절절한 감성과는 결이 다른 영화였다. 이에 필자는 당시 31살의 가수 김상국이 불나비를 불렀던 깊은 감성의 배경을 다음과 같이 헤아렸다.
1934년 부산에서 출생한 김상국은 6.25 전쟁 중에 미군 부대 클럽장이었던 윌리엄 장교를 만나게 되면서 그의 재능이 드러났다. 아버지와 같은 사랑을 주었던 윌리엄 장교의 배려로 미군클럽에서 일하며 다양한 음악을 접한 그는 윌리엄 장교의 도움으로 진해 미 공군기지에 정식 부대원이 되어 근무하던 중 윌리엄 장교의 전사 소식을 받는 아픔을 맞았다.
충격적인 슬픔을 잊으려 군 생활을 청산하고 돌아와 서울로 상경하여 연예계에 뛰어들어 밤무대를 전전하다가 1965년 쥐구멍에도 볕들 날 있다로 데뷔하였다. 이어 단역으로 출연한 영화 불나비의 주제가를 부른 것이다. 당시 노래 가사의 처연한 그리움의 대상을 불나비처럼 떠나간 윌리엄 장교를 생각하며 노래하였을 가능성이다. 허스키한 음색의 소울이 특성적인 창법에 녹아내린 노래 불나비는 히트곡이 되었다.
시대의 명곡 불나비는 그동안 많은 가수에 의하여 새롭게 불렸다. 1983년 김수희가 부른 불나비에 이어 1992년 강승모가 커버한 락 버전 트롯 불나비가 큰 사랑을 받았다. 이어 2006년 영화 타짜에서 한대수가 불나비를 불렀으며 다음 해 2007년 SBS 드라마 쩐의 전쟁 주제가로 조관우가 부른 불나비에 이어 2010년 주병선이 부른 노래가 대표적이다.
