내일이면 이태원 참사 100일을 맞는다. 아픈 숨결들을 추모하는 쪽지들이 처연하게 떨고 있는 현장을 어제 다녀왔다. 현장 골목 중심부에서 대형 샵 밀라노콜렉션을 수십 년 동안 운영하는 동향(목포)의 남인석 선배님을 뵈었다.
참사 당일 눈앞에서 벌어진 믿을 수 없는 참변에 단 한 명이라도 더 구하려 몸부림치며 새벽 4시까지 현장에 있었던 생생한 증인이었다. 당시 모든 언론이 주목하였던 취재 인물로 영국 BBC 뉴스 인터뷰 도중 오열하던 모습이 세계에 알려진 선배는 지난 1월 12일 국회에서 열린 이태원 참사 국정조사특별위원회 2차 공청회에서 진술인으로 참석하여 발언 후 눈물을 쏟았다.

어느 기자의 손 편지에서 치열한 취재 열기를 가늠하며 그간의 심경을 묻는 물음에 평소 활달한 성격인 선배는 참사 이후 심한 후유증에 시달리고 있었다. 참사 당일 각 시간 단위로 궁금한 내용을 조심스럽게 물을 때마다 선배는 출입문 너머 아픈 기억이 출렁이는 골목을 멍하니 바라보았다.
목포 출신 서양화가 고 최낙경 작가와 죽마고우였던 선배는 주요한 작가들의 작품을 수집하여온 감성적이지만, 해학과 위트가 많은 선배이다. 참사 이후 국내 외 주요한 언론의 기자를 거의 모두 만났다며 불면의 고통을 호소하는 모습에서 참사의 충격이 와닿았다. 하물며 당사자인 유족들의 충격과 아픔은 어떠할까?
내일이면 100일을 맞아 유족들이 서울시에 신청한 광화문 광장 추모제 장소 사용이 허가되지 않았다. 강행하려는 유족 측과 막으려는 당국의 현실이 아프다. (참사의 아픔을 교훈으로 소중한 세상을 열어가겠습니다)라는 자세로 서울시가 솔선하여 국민적 추모의 장을 열어갈 수는 없었을까?
