러시아와 6시간 시차가 있는 23일 저녁이었다. 러시아 남서부에서부터 그루지야, 아제르바이잔, 아르메니아에서부터 터키와 인접한 코카서스 지역 뉴스를 전하는 온라인 뉴스 매체 캅카스스키 매듭(Кавказский узел)에 러시아 용병 기업 바그너 그룹(PMC)에 대한 주요한 뉴스가 등장하였다.
러시아에서는 지난해 4월부터 SNS 트위터 활동이 금지된 이후 연이어 6월부터 페이스북과 인스타그램이거나 왓츠앱과 같은 메타 기업 SNS 또한, 금지된 까닭에 러시아와 연관된 긴급한 뉴스가 등장하면 외국 주요 언론사 특파원 보도에 앞서 가상사설망(VPN)을 통한 현지인 소통이거나 텔레그램 채널 뉴스가 판을 친다.
필자는 묵직한 느낌을 감지하여 구글 앱으로 시청이 가능한 온라인 뉴스 매체 캅카스스키 매듭을 주시하였다. 이는 평소에도 러시아와 연관된 주요 뉴스에서 러시아는 물론 세계 주요 언론들이 이 매체의 뉴스를 긴급하게 인용해 온 까닭이었다. 이러한 배경은 우크라이나와 접경한 러시아 남부 모든 주요 지역에 정보요원에 버금가는 뛰어난 현지 특파원들이 포진해 있는 까닭이다.
예상은 적중하였다. 현지 시각 24일 오전 7시 23분이었다. 러시아 용병 바그너 그룹(PMC)의 수장 예브게니 프리고진과 러시아 국방부 차관 중 한 명인 유누스 벡 예브 쿠로프와 러시아군 참모차장 블라디미르 알렉시브 중장이 등장하는 바그너(PMC)라는 명칭의 영상물이 등장하였다.
장소는 용병 바그너 그룹(PMC)이 장악한 로스토프나도누 군 사령부였다. 러시아 세르게이 쇼이구 국방부 장관을 대변하는 차관 유누스 벡 예브 쿠로프와 발레리 게라시모프 참모총장을 대변하는 참모차장 블라디미르 알렉시브 중장은 엄밀하게 러시아 군 이인자들로 대화 내용의 행간은 협상이었다.

이러한 영상이 발표된 직후 7시 29분 무렵 용병 바그너 그룹(PMC) 수장 프리고진은 러시아 남서부 로스토프주 행정 중심지이며 군사 요충지인 로스토프나도누 군 사령부를 장악하였다는 녹화 영상 메시지를 타전하였다.

이러한 사태를 지켜보며 필자는 1995년 국내에서 개봉되었던 ‘포위당한 채로’의 뜻인 영화 언더시즈(Under Siege)가 떠올랐다. 영화는 미 해군의 대표적인 전함 미조리호의 마지막 항해를 배경으로 전함의 핵무기를 탈취하여 세계를 위협하는 세력과 싸우는 해군특전대 네이비 실 출신인 전함 요리사의 활약을 그린 액션 스타 스티븐 시걸이 열연한 영화였다.
