올해로 20주년을 맞는 프리즈 런던(Frieze London) 2023 아트페어는 영국 런던 중앙부에 있는 왕립공원 리젠트 파크에서 10월 11일 개막하여 15일까지 5일간 열린다.
프리즈 아트페어 기간에 런던의 세계적인 갤러리 사치갤러리에서 열리는 또 다른 아트페어가 스타트 아트페어(StART Art Fair)이다. 많은 이야기가 있는 사치갤러리는 영국 현대미술을 대표하는 아티스트 ‘데미안 허스트’가 세계적 작가로 탄생한 산실이다.
1988년 1월 데미안 허스트가 골드스미스 미술 대학 졸업을 앞두고 영국의 젊은 미술가들을 지칭하는 yBa 전시를 큐레이팅한 프리즈(Freeze) 전을 열었다. 이를 통하여 사치갤러리 창업주 찰스 사치(Charles Saatchi)에게 주목되어 새로운 역사가 쓰인 것이다.
사치갤러리 창업주 찰스 사치는 이라크 바그다드 태생 유대인으로 어려서 영국에 이주하여 광고 회사 카피라이터를 거쳐 1970년 동생 모리스 사치와 광고 회사 사치 앤 사치(Saatchi & Saatchi)를 설립하였다. 창의적이며 예술적 감각이 어우러진 선구적 광고 기법으로 세계적인 기업으로 성장하면서 많은 미술품을 수집하였다. 그러나 치열한 정쟁으로 많은 시련을 맞게 되면서 1985년 런던에 사치갤러리를 열었다.
이러한 이야기를 바탕으로 살펴야 할 인물이 2014년 스타트 아트페어를 설립한 세계적인 미술 수집가 데이비드 시클리티라(David Ciclitira) 회장과 세레넬라 시클리티라(Serenella Ciclitira) 부부이다. 데이비드 시클리티라 회장은 오늘날 위성 방송 환경의 지평을 열었던 라이브 이벤트 & 엔터테인먼트 콘텐츠 기업 그룹 약칭 (LVCG)을 바탕으로 성공한 글로벌 기업가이다.
시클리티라 회장의 부인 세레넬라 시클리티라는 아일랜드의 유서 깊은 국립 종합대학 더블린대학교 트리니티 칼리지에서 미술사를 공부하였다. 두 부부가 세계적인 미술품 수집가로 등장한 배경이며 막대한 영향력이 있는 주요한 미술 프로그램을 펼치고 있는 바탕이다. 시클리티라 회장 부부는 2009년 각 나라의 젊은 예술가들을 후원하는 Eye Program 시행에 이어 2014년 글로벌 아트페어인 스타트 아트페어(StART)를 출발시켰다.

올해 10주년 맞이한 스타트 아트페어는 특별한 기획으로 프리즈 아트페어와 함께 큰 주목을 받고 있다. 대표적으로 현대미술의 메카로 떠 오르는 영국의 아트 하운드 갤러리 부스의 특별한 기획 ‘Paint it Black’에 많은 관람객이 몰렸다. 영국의 살아있는 전설의 록밴드 롤링 스톤스가 1966년 베트남 전쟁 시기에 발표한 시대의 감성을 담아낸 명곡을 명제로 한 전시다.
록 음악의 시대적 감성에 경의를 담은 전시는 록밴드 레드 제플린의 기타리스트 지미 페이지 딸인 사진작가 스칼렛 페이지와 거리의 예술가에서 독학으로 특성적인 회화와 조각과 사진에 이르는 다양한 장르의 작품으로 주목받는 여성 아티스트 나오미 월렌스와 빛을 바탕으로 우주에서부터 지구 환경에 이르는 공공예술 조형물로 잘 알려진 여성 종합예술가 로렌 베이커의 다양한 작품들이 선 보이고 있다.
나아가 이번 스타트 아트페어에 참가한 국내 갤러리 부스에 많은 관람객이 찾아와 화제이다. 스타트 아트페어를 주관하는 StART ART Global의 한국 독점 권리를 가지고 있는 국내 미술 기업 스타트아트코리아 부스이다.

스타트아트코리아는 신진작가 발굴과 지원이라는 스타트 아트페어가 지향하는 뜻을 중시한 공모전을 실시하여 100여 명의 참여자 중 실험적인 한국 미술의 미래를 선보일 3명의 김민정, 김희주, 황승현 작가를 선정하였다. 이들 작가의 작품이 아트페어에 소개되었다.
또한, 강희, 기안84, 김규종, 김혜연, 낙타, 레지나킴, 미뇽, 소백, 썸머그린, 윤민주, 이훈상, 임소명, 조윤국, 채정완 감만지의 작품을 선보였다. 이와 함께 K-팝 그룹 세븐틴의 멤버 ‘디에잇(작가명 MINGHAO)’도 11점의 작품을 걸었으며 넷플릭스 순위 1위를 기록한 한국 액션 영화 ‘카터’의 영화감독 정병길의 미술 작품이 출품되어 주목받았다. artwww@naver.com
