브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= 이중근 부영그룹 회장이 4일 KAIST 나눔관에서 열린 ‘우정(宇庭) 나눔 연구동 기공식’에 참석해 200억 원 상당의 기숙사 리모델링을 약속했다. 이 날 행사에는 이 회장을 비롯한 부영그룹 관계자들과 KAIST 이광형 총장, 부총장단 등 주요 내외빈이 참석했다.
리모델링 대상 기숙사는 가장 노후화된 대전캠퍼스 나눔관과 궁동아파트, 서울캠퍼스의 소정사와 파정사 4개 동이다. 1989년에 준공된 나눔관은 시설이 너무 오래돼 운영이 중단됐다. 1993년 준공한 궁동아파트는 부분적으로 보수해 사용하고 있지만 시설이 낡아 불편이 많았다. 서울캠퍼스의 소정사와 파정사도 각각 1972년, 75년에 준공돼 리모델링이 절실히 필요한 상황이다.
부영그룹은 외관 건축공사를 비롯해 기계·전기·통신·소방 등 내·외부 건물 전체를 리모델링 할 예정이다.
KAIST는 이중근 회장의 뜻을 오래도록 기리기 위해 리모델링한 모든 기숙사에 이 회장의 아호인 우정(宇庭)을 따서 ‘우정 나눔 연구동(가칭)’, ‘우정 궁동 아파트(가칭)’, ‘우정 소정사(가칭)’, ‘우정 파정사(가칭)’ 등으로 명명하기로 했다.
이광형 KAIST 총장은 “다양한 분야에서 사회공헌 활동을 해 오신 이중근 회장님의 선한 영향력이 KAIST에도 전파될 것으로 기대한다”며 “미래 인재 양성을 위한 부영그룹과 이중근 회장님의 큰 뜻을 감사히 받아들여 학생들의 요청이 가장 많았던 노후 기숙사 시설과 환경을 개선하고, 세계적으로 우수한 인재를 양성하기 위해 지속해서 노력할 것이다”고 전했다.
이중근 회장은 “대한민국 과학 기술 인재 양성의 요람인 KAIST에서 학생들이 꿈과 재능을 키워나가 훌륭한 인재로 성장할 수 있게 되기를 바란다”고 말했다.
