주영한국문화원이 펭귄클래식으로 한국문학 비평의 새로운 장을 열었다. 주영한국문화원(원장 선승혜)은 지난 5월 3일(금) 펭귄클래식 한국 단편소설 선집(The Penguin Book of Korean Short Stories)을 주제로 한국문학의 밤 행사를 개최했다. 이번 행사는 영국 문고본 출간 기념으로 기획되어 한국 단편 문학의 정수를 선보이는 계기를 마련한 것이다.
펭귄 클래식(Penguin Classics)은 영국의 출판사 펭귄 북스에서 1935년 처음으로 출판된 문고판을 바탕으로 문학, 비문학, 교육서 등 다양한 분야로 확장된 문고판 책을 말한다.
이러한 문고판의 역사는 1455년 구텐베르크에 의하여 서양의 인쇄 문화가 처음 열리게 된 독일에서부터 시작되었다. 1867년 11월 독일 연방 법률이 30년 이전 사망한 작가의 모든 문학 작품에 저작권(저작재산권) 소멸을 명시하여 자유 이용 저작물(public domain)로 규정하면서부터였다.
독일의 안톤 필립 레클람(1807~1896)이 1828년 라이프치히에 설립한 출판사 필립 레클란 준에서 1867년 11월 10일 괴테의 ‘파우스트Ⅰ’과 ‘파우스트Ⅱ’를 출판하면서 최초의 레클람 문고가 탄생하였다.
이러한 역사를 안고 1935년 설립된 영국의 출판사 펭귄 북스에서 1946년 문고판 ‘오디세이아’를 출판하면서 훗날 세계를 거머쥔 펭귄 클래식이 탄생한 것이다.
이러한 펭귄 클래식 세계문학 전집에 처음으로 ‘한국 단편소설 선집’이 포함되어 지난해 4월 출판되었다. 한국 단편 문학이 처음으로 소개된 선집은 지난 40여 년간 한국문학 번역과 출판에 지대한 공헌이 있는 브루스 풀턴(Bruce Fulton) 교수가 편집하였다. 캐나다 브리티시컬럼비아대학 아시아학과 교수 브루스 풀턴은 일제강점기부터 현대 작가에 이르기까지 100여 년의 한국 현대사를 아우르는 단편소설을 선별하였다.
브루스 풀턴 교수는 보든 칼리지에서 철학을 공부하고 워싱턴대학에서 한국지역학 석사학위를 받은 후 서울대학교에서 한국 현대 문학 박사학위를 받았다. 이 무렵 1978년 서울대학교에서 한국인 아내 주찬 풀턴을 만나 결혼한 부부는 서로를 보완하고 일깨워주는 가장 이상적인 번역팀이 되어 한국문학을 세계에 알리는 전령이 되어 브루스 풀턴 교수는 대산재단 번역상과 2018년 만해문학대상을 비롯한 많은 상을 받았다.
특히 풀턴 교수 부부는 지난 2021년 코로나 팬더믹 시기에 동인문학상 수상자 김숨(46) 작가의 위안부 문제를 담은 장편소설 ‘한 명’을 ‘One Left’로 번역하여 일본군 위안부 피해자 할머니들의 실제 증언을 재구성한 장편소설에 담긴 실체를 세계에 전하려 하였지만, 30여 출판사의 출판 거절의 난관을 헤치고 워싱턴대 출판부와 계약하여 이를 세상에 알린 장본인이다.

주영한국문화원은 정기 문학 프로그램인 ‘한국문학의 밤’ 올해 첫 행사에서 브루스 풀턴 교수를 화상으로 연결하였다. 사회를 맡은 런던대학교 동양‧아프리카대학 그레이스 고(Grace Koh) 교수와의 대담에서 이번 선집의 기획과 선정 과정, 출간 의의, 향후 계획 등에 대한 많은 이야기가 전해졌다.
브루스 풀턴 교수는 펭귄클래식에 한국 단편 문학이 처음 포함되었음을 강조하면서 앞으로 추가되어야 할 작품에 대한 중요함도 거론하였다. 대담에 이어 독자와의 질의응답 시간이 진행되면서 현장에 참석한 관객과 온라인으로 참석한 여러 석학 등의 심중한 질문이 이어졌다.
현지 출판사 펭귄랜덤하우스와 협력하여 한국문학을 소개한 주영한국문화원은 다음 행사로 5월 15일(수)에 캐나다계 한인 작가 허주은을 화상 연결하여 작가의 신작 ‘어 크레인 어몽 울브스(A Crane Among Wolves)’에 대하여 대담을 나눌 예정이다. 나아가 앞으로 현지 다양한 기관과 협력하여 한국문학의 다채로운 면모를 선보일 것임을 알렸다.
선승혜 주영한국문화원장은 “20세기 한국 단편소설은 새로운 미래를 지향한 치열했던 시대의 삶이 녹아있는 작품으로 한국 단편소설이 문학의 나라 영국에서 펭귄클래식으로 번역된 사실은 그 뜻이 깊다면서 특히 한국과 영국의 문학 애호가들이 함께 토론하고 서로를 일깨운 시간은 한국 미학으로 가는 소중한 디딤돌이라며 행사의 의미를 강조했다. artwww@naver.com

With this history, Penguin Classics, which later captured the world, was born when Penguin Books, a British publisher established in 1935, published a literary edition of Odyssea in 1946.
The collection of Penguin Classics World Literature includes an anthology of Korean short stories for the first time and was published in April last year. The anthology, in which Korean short literature was first introduced, was edited by Professor Bruce Fulton, who has made a great contribution to the translation and publication of Korean literature over the past 40 years. Bruce Fulton, a professor of Asian studies at the University of British Columbia in Canada, selected short stories covering more than 100 years of Korean modern history, from Japanese colonial era to contemporary writers.
Professor Bruce Fulton studied philosophy at Bowdoin College and received a master's degree in Korean regional studies at Washington University before earning a doctorate in Korean contemporary literature at Seoul National University. Around this time, the couple, who met and married Korean wife Joo Chan Fulton at Seoul National University in 1978, became the ideal translation team to complement and awaken each other, and became a messenger to promote Korean literature to the world, receiving many awards, including the Daesan Foundation Translation Award and the Manhae Literature Award in 2018.
In particular, during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, Professor Fulton and his wife tried to convey to the world the reality of the novel, which reconstructed the actual testimony of the grandmothers of Japanese Japanese Military Sexual Slavery victims by translating "One" into "One Left," a feature novel about the Japanese Military Sexual Slavery of the Dongin Literature Award winner Kim Soom (46), but they are the ones who made it known to the world by signing a contract with the University of Washington Press after over 30 publishers refused to publish it.
The Korean Cultural Center in England connected Professor Bruce Fulton by video at this year's first event of the "Korean Literature Night," a regular literary program. Many stories were told about the planning, selection process, publication significance, and future plans of the collection during a conversation with Grace Koh, a professor at the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies.
Professor Bruce Fulton emphasized that Korean short literature was first included in the Penguin Classics and also mentioned the importance of works to be added in the future. Following the conversation, the Q&A session with the reader was held, and serious questions such as the audience who attended the scene and several scholars who attended online were followed.
The Korean Cultural Center in England, which introduced Korean literature in cooperation with local publisher Penguin Random House, will have a video connection with Canadian-Korean writer Heo Joo-eun on May 15 (Wednesday) to talk about the artist's new work "A Crane Among Wolves."
