올해로 7회를 맞이하는 한국무용 축제 코리안댄스페스티벌이 영국 스코틀랜드의 문화도시 글래스고를 비롯해 영국 전역에서 개최된다. 주영한국문화원은 지난 2018년부터 영국의 권위 있는 현대무용 기관인 더 플레이스와 협력하여 코리안댄스페스티벌을 개최하여 한국무용의 위상을 알려왔다.
제7회 코리안댄스페스티벌은 오는 5월 16일(목) 글래스고의 명소로 알려진 트램웨이 극장에서 개막 공연을 시작으로 5월 18일(토) 잉글랜드 북동부 도시 뉴캐슬의 무용 전용 공간 댄스 시티에서 공연한다.
이후 5월 22일(수) 수도 런던에 소재한 현대무용 전문기관 더 플레이스 공연에 이어 5월 24일(금) 잉글랜드 남부 해안 휴양도시 본머스에 소재한 파빌리온 댄스 사우스 웨스트 공연 후 5월 25일(토) 다시 런던 더 플레이스에서 공연한다.
이어 5월 31일(금)부터 6월 1일(토)까지 런던 더 플레이스에서 이어지는 코리안댄스페스티벌은 6월 3일(월)에서 6월 4일(화)까지 맨체스터의 대표적인 문화공간 더 라우리 공연을 끝으로 주요 5개 도시에서 펼친 축제의 대미를 장식한다.
5월 16일(목) 현대무용의 산실인 스코틀랜드 글래스고 트램웨이 극장에서 열리는 개막 공연은 한 장소에서 동시에 공연하는 더블빌 공연으로 허성임 안무가의 최신작 ‘내일은 지금이고 오늘은 어제이다’와 정철인 안무가의 ‘비행’이 공연된다.

2021년 코리안댄스페스티벌에서 전석 매진된 개막 작품 ‘W.A.Y’로 영국 유력 일간지 가디언으로부터 최상위 평점 리뷰를 받았던 허성임 안무가는 범람하는 미디어와 정보가 사회에 미치는 영향을 몸짓으로 탐구하는 흥미로운 작품을 선보일 예정이다.
본 작품은 더 플레이스와 서울국제공연예술제가 공동 제작하여, 2023년 서울국제공연예술제를 통해 초연된 바 있으며, 영국문화예술위원회의 지원을 받아 더욱더 발전된 작품으로 코리안댄스페스티벌을 통해 공연된다는 점에서 그 의미가 크다.
나아가 탁월한 오브제 활용과 파워풀한 움직임으로 주제가 품은 의식을 풀어내는 안무가 정철인의 작품 ‘비행’은 중력을 거슬러 도약을 꿈꾸는 인간의 욕망을 신체적으로 밀도 있게 표현한다. 인간의 한계에 대한 독특한 해석으로 호평을 받았던 작품이 현대 무용의 본고장 영국 관객들에게 어떻게 받아들여질지 귀추가 주목된다.
특히 시대의 춤꾼으로 평가받는 허성임 안무가는 벨기에 유학파로 세계적인 안무가이며 미술가로도 잘 알려진 벨기에 태생인 얀파브르의 ‘트루블렌컴퍼니’와 음악과 언어의 구조적 관계를 중시한 작품으로 잘 알려진 벨기에 왕립미술학교 출신 유명 안무가이며 연극 연출가인 라우워스가 설립한 ‘니드컴퍼니’ 단원을 거친 세계가 주목하는 안무가이다.

5월 25일(토)에는 장혜림 안무가가 이끄는 99아트컴퍼니의 작품 ‘제 III’이 더 플레이스에서 영국 데뷔 무대를 갖는다. 한국 현대무용을 이끌어갈 차세대 주자로 주목받는 장혜림 안무가의 작품 ‘제 III’은 노동의 숭고한 가치를 전통춤 승무의 춤사위와 장단을 모티브로 표현한 작품이다.
2016년 국립 현대무용단과 스웨덴 스코네스댄스시어터의 교류 작업으로 국내 초연 후 많은 관심 속에 제작된 ‘제’ 연작 중 세 번째 작품으로 ‘사회현상에 대한 지속적인 관심과 함께 탄탄한 텍스트를 바탕으로 역동적 안무와 특히 이야기를 실행 가능한 형식으로 배치하고 조율하는 자연스러운 드라마트루기 능력을 확인시켜 준 수작’이라는 평을 받았다. 장혜림 안무가는 이 작품으로 제2회 서울예술상 대상을 받았다.

이후 안애순 안무가의 작품 ‘척’이 5월 31일(금) 과 6월 1일(토) 양일간 런던 더 플레이스 공연과 6월 3일(월)과 6월 4일(화) 맨체스터 더 라우리 순회공연을 끝으로 제7회 코리안댄스페스티벌은 마무리된다.
한국 현대무용계를 대표하는 안애순 안무가의 작품 ‘척’은 오랫동안 고민해 온 의식을 확장하여 시간의 부피와 신체와 장소의 고유성을 사유한 작품이다. 2021년 국립아시아문화전당에서 초연된 작품 ‘척’은 국립 아시아문화전당재단과의 협력으로 이번 제7회 코리안댄스페스티벌을 통하여 선보인 작품이다.
더 라우리 극장은 맨체스터 최대 규모 공연장으로 영국 19개 극장으로 구성된 연합체인 UK 댄스 컨소시엄 회원 극장이다. 안애순 안무가 작품 ‘척’의 이번 라우리 극장 공연을 발판으로 영국 전역에 한국 작품을 소개할 수 있는 계기와 바탕이 될 것으로 기대된다.
