주차 규모는 140대 정도로 주차장 이용자에게는 별도의 주차 요금은 부과하지 않는다.
이번 임시 공영주차장 조성으로 도심의 침체된 지역 상권 활성화와 주차 문제가 크게 해소될 것으로 보인다.
시는 올해 초 지난 2021년 12월 폐선된 철도 유휴부지 활용을 위해 국가철도공단과 협의한 결과 폐철도 해당 부지 내 임시 주차장 조성 합의안을 도출했다.
향후 경찰서 등 관계기관과 협의를 거쳐 철길 및 지장물을 철거한 후 오는 10월 임시 주차장 조성을 완료할 계획이다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “폐철도 부지의 개발은 다양한 이해관계가 존재하는 만큼 시민들의 의견 수렴은 물론 문화재, 관광, 경관 등을 종합적으로 고려해 단계적으로 추진하겠다”라며 “상설 주차시설은 아니지만 지역의 주차난을 완화하고 인근 상권 활성화에 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다”고 말했다.
한편 지난해 경주시는 옛 경주역 부지 개발계획 용역으로 공공청사, 상징광장 등 ‘복합·상업·행정 공간’ 결과를 얻었다.
