쿠팡이 남대전 프레시 풀필먼트센터(FC) 준공식을 열고 본격적인 운영에 나섰다. 지역 주민 우선 채용 등을 통해 신규 인력 1300여 명을 직고용할 계획이다.
쿠팡은 9월 24일 오후 대전광역시 동구 남대전 물류산업단지에서 유득원 대전시 행정부시장, 쿠팡 박대준 대표가 참석한 가운데 ‘남대전 프레시 풀필먼트센터 준공식’을 개최했다고 밝혔다. 이날 행사에는 조원휘 대전시의회의장, 박희조 대전 동구청장, 오관영 대전 동구의회 의장 등 100여 명이 참석했다.
남대전 프레시 풀필먼트센터는 연면적 8만8000㎡ 규모로 축구장 10여 개 크기다. 총투자금은 약 1800억 원으로, 직고용 예상 인원은 1300여 명이다. 2020년 5월 대전광역시와 투자협약 체결 이후 2022년 착공했다.
남대전 프레시 풀필먼트센터는 로켓프레시(신선식품 새벽배송 서비스)를 지속적으로 확대해 나가는 데 핵심 역할을 맡게 될 것으로 보인다.
쿠팡은 최초 투자협약 당시 전망한 고용인원(300여명)보다 1000여 명 늘린 1300여 명을 직고용할 방침이다. 청년 고용률을 끌어올려야 하는 대전 동구 지역에 활력이 될 것으로 기대된다. 통계청에 따르면 올 상반기 대전 5개구 가운데 동구의 청년 고용률은 40.7%를 기록했다. 쿠팡은 대전 동구를 비롯한 지역민을 우선 직고용해 지역 경제 활성화에 이바지할 계획이다. 쿠팡의 전체 고용인원 가운데 청년 고용인원은 2만 명 이상에 달한다.
나아가 남대전 프레시 풀필먼트센터는 대전과 충청권의 중소 제조사와 지방농가들의 물류비 절감 및 전국 신선식품 판로 확대에 시너지 효과를 낼 것으로 예상한다. 지역 농어가에서 만드는 신선식품과 특산품의 직매입이 늘어나고 전국 단위의 빠른 배송으로 이들의 판로가 확대되는 교두보로 자리매김할 전망이다.
쿠팡 박대준 대표는 “대전시를 비롯한 여러 기타 관계자분들의 불철주야 노력 덕분에 지역 경제 활성화의 중요한 계기가 되는 FC 준공이 가능했다”며 “대전시민 우선 고용 등을 통해 다양한 측면의 지역경제 활성화 효과를 기대하며, 대전 지역 중소상공인의 해외 진출과 기업 경쟁력 제고를 위한 교두보가 되어 대전 경제 발전의 디딤돌이 될 수 있도록 노력을 멈추지 않을 것”이라고 말했다.
쿠팡은 이번 남대전 프레시 풀필먼트센터 준공을 필두로 2026년까지 약 3조 원을 투자, 물류 인프라 확대를 본격화한다. 쿠팡은 대전을 포함, 광주광역시·경북 김천 등 전국 9개 지역에 추가 물류 인프라를 구축해 1만 명 이상을 직고용할 방침이다. 계획이 실현되면 쿠팡을 포함한 물류 빛 배송자회사(쿠팡풀필먼트서비스· 쿠팡로지스틱스서비스)의 전체 직고용 인력은 8만여 명으로 늘고 이 가운데 비서울 지역의 근무자 비중이 80% 이상을 차지할 것으로 예상된다.

More than 10 soccer fields... 1,300 new employees, including prioritizing local residents, have been hired
Coupang opened the Namdaegu Fresh Fulfillment Center (FC) and began full-scale operations. It plans to hire more than 1,300 new employees, including prioritizing local residents.
On the afternoon of September 24, Coupang announced that it held the 'Namdaejeon Fresh Fulfillment Center Completion Ceremony' at Namdaejeon Logistics Industrial Complex in Dong-gu, Daejeon, with Daejeon City Mayor Yoo Deuk-won and Coupang CEO Park Dae-joon in attendance. The event was attended by more than 100 people, including Daejeon City Council President Cho Won-hwi, Daejeon Dong-gu Mayor Park Hee-jo, and Daejeon Dong-gu Council Chairman Oh Kwan-young.
The Namdae Fresh Fulfillment Center has a total area of 88,000㎡, which is the size of 10 soccer fields. The total investment is about 180 billion won, and more than 1,300 people are expected to be directly employed. Construction began in 2022 after signing an investment agreement with Daejeon Metropolitan City in May 2020.
The Namdaejeon Fresh Fulfillment Center is expected to play a key role in the continued expansion of Rocket Fresh (a fresh food early morning delivery service).
Coupang plans to employ more than 1,300 people at the center, an increase of more than 1,000 from the original investment agreement. The move is expected to revitalize the Daejeon East District, which is in need of boosting its youth employment rate. According to Statistics Korea, the youth employment rate in Daejeon's five districts was 40.7 percent in the first half of this year. Coupang plans to contribute to the revitalization of the local economy by prioritizing direct hiring of local residents, including those from Daejeon's East District. Coupang employs more than 20,000 young people out of its total workforce.
Furthermore, the Namdaegu Fresh Fulfillment Center is expected to have a synergistic effect on reducing logistics costs for small and medium-sized manufacturers and local farmers in Daejeon and Chungcheong Province and expanding the sales of fresh foods nationwide. It is expected to become a bridgehead for the direct purchase of fresh food and specialty products made by local farmers and expand their sales through fast delivery across the country.
“Thanks to the tireless efforts of Daejeon City and other stakeholders, the completion of the FC, which is an important opportunity to revitalize the local economy, was possible,” said Daejun Park, CEO of Coupang. ”We expect the FC to revitalize the local economy in various ways, including prioritizing employment for Daejeon citizens, and we will continue to make efforts to make it a stepping stone for Daejeon's economic development by becoming a bridgehead for small and medium-sized businesses in Daejeon to go abroad and improve corporate competitiveness.”
With the completion of the Namdaejeon Fresh Fulfillment Center, Coupang will invest approximately KRW 3 trillion by 2026 to expand its logistics infrastructure. Coupang plans to build additional logistics infrastructure in nine regions across the country, including Daejeon, Gwangju, Gwangju Metropolitan City, Gimcheon, Gyeongbuk, and more than 10,000 employees. Once the plan is realized, the total number of direct employees of Coupang's logistics light delivery companies (Coupang Fulfillment Service and Coupang Logistics Service) is expected to increase to more than 80,000, with more than 80 percent of the employees in non-Seoul areas.
