(브레이크뉴스인천 문광수 기자) 인천시가 오는 25일부터 27일까지 인천대공원 전시실에서 ‘2024년 극지 체험 및 전시회’를 개최한다고 밝혔다.
인천시에 따르면, 세계적으로 극지에 대한 과학연구가 더욱 중요해지고 있는 가운데, 극지 연구 중심 도시로서 인천의 위상을 높이고 환경 파괴 심각성을 시민께 알리겠다는 취지다.
생생한 북극과 남극의 현장을 사진으로 만나볼 수 있으며, 환경문제의 심각성을 알리는 극지 탐험가로 변신하는 체험(크로마키 가상현실 활용)을 비롯해 북극곰 천연비누 만들기와 핸드메이드 수세미 만들기 등 다양한 프로그램이 준비돼 있다.
또, 전시회에는 올해 4월 25일 극지연구소가 설립 20주년을 맞아 공개한 연구소 캐릭터 ‘쁘리’가 함께한다.
쁘리는 기후변화로 남극 얼음이 녹으면서 집을 잃게 돼 성격이 예민해진 펭귄으로 지구온난화와 서식지 파괴로 사라지는 펭귄을 보호하자는 의미를 담고 있다.
방문자는 쁘리와 함께하는 포토존, 환경 실천을 위한 다짐 등을 기재하여 부착하는 환경보호 공감 온도 스페셜 이벤트 등에도 무료로 참여할 수 있다.
김을수 시 해양항공국장은 “극지는 사람의 손길이 닿지 않은 무한한 잠재력과 가치를 지닌 공간이며 지구온난화, 기후변화 등 환경문제와 관련해 과학적으로 중요한 의미를 갖는 곳으로 이번 전시를 통해 환경 파괴의 심각성과 극지 연구의 중요성을 알아갈 수 있는 계기가 되기를 바란다”고 말했다.
한편, 인천은 극지연구소가 소재한 곳으로써 올해 9월 2030년 남북극 통합 극지학술대회 개최도시로 선정됐다.
전 세계에서 2천 명 이상의 극지 과학자가 10일간 모여 회의를 할 것으로 예상되며, 시는 극지 과학 연구 분야 위상을 드높일 계기로 삼는다는 방침이다.
