자가 성체 줄기세포 전문 연구기업 바이오스타 본부장을 맡고 계시는 장윤선 박사님 초대로 세종문화회관 세종체임버홀에서 열린 소프라노 이효숙 독창회를 다녀왔다. 이효숙 음악가는 영문학을 전공하고 대한항공 스튜어디스로 근무하다 퇴직 후 뒤늦게 성악을 공부하였다.
5회째 열리는 음악가의 이번 독창회는 희귀 난치환자를 위한 줄기세포 생명재단 돕기 자선음악회이다. 이효숙 음악가는 매회 독창회마다 지진 피해가 있었던 네팔 아동 돕기와 국경없는의사회 돕기, 루게릭병 요양센터 건립을 위한 자선음악회로 열어왔다.
음악가의 소외된 계층을 위한 헌신적인 정신을 후원하는 분들이 450여 석의 공연장을 가득 메웠다. 세종체임버홀 공연에서 늘 느끼는 점이지만, 악기 고유의 소리가 살아있는 어쿠스틱 음향에 최적화된 실내악 전문 공연홀이다.
공연 오픈 곡은 영국 작곡가 랜돈 로널드(1873~1938)의 사랑의 시작과 끝을 사계절로 그려내어 삶의 여정으로 대비한 연가곡 ‘인생의 주기(A cycle of life)’였다. 5곡 중 서곡(Prelude)과 봄을 그린 ‘숲속에서(Down in the Forest-Spring)’와 여름을 그린 ‘사랑이여 나는 너를 얻었다(Love I have won you-Summer)’를 하나의 흐름으로 노래하였다.
다음 곡은 클래식 기타연주자 배장흠이 체코 태생의 기타리스트이며 작곡가와 음악 교육자인 이지 이르말(1925~2019)의 바덴 재즈 모음곡(Baden Jazz Suite) 중 1악장 ‘간결하게(simplícĭtas)’를 연주하였다.
특별한 프로그램으로 구성된 음악회의 다양성이 깊숙하게 와닿았다. 체코의 기타리스트이며 작곡가와 음악 교육자인 이지 이르말은 일생을 클래식 기타에 전념한 음악가였다. 브라질과 남미 음악의 전통을 기반으로 삼바와 룸바 그리고 보사노바 리듬에 심취한 기반에서 많은 음악을 작곡하였다.
그의 바덴 재즈 모음곡은 브라질 보사노바 음악의 대가이며 기타리스트인 바덴 포웰(1937~2000) 에게 헌정한 음악이다. 음악회에서 배장흠 기타리스트가 연주한 1악장 ‘간결하게(SIMPLICITAS)’와 2악장 ‘자장가(BERCEUSE)’와 3악장 ‘삼바 풍의 론도(RONDO A LA SAMBA)’로 구성되어 있다.
‘이지 이르말’은 재즈 음악에 깊은 헤아림을 가지고 있는 음악가로 연주에 담긴 즉흥성은 세계적인 평가를 받고 있다.
다양한 음악을 품은 소프라노 이효숙 독창회의 다음 음악은 스페인 작곡가 페르난도 오브라도르스(1897~1945)의 스페인 고전 가곡 ‘두 편의 민속적인 노래(Dos cantares populares)’와 전통 춤곡을 이르는 엘비토(El Vito)였다. 배장흠 기타리스트의 격조 높은 연주와 함께 독창회 반주를 맡은 박성희 피아니스트의 깨알 같은 핸드 캐스터네츠 악기 연주가 깊어져 가는 가을밤의 정취를 한층 정겹게 품고 있었다.

후반부 공연에서는 요하네스 브람스(1833~1897)의 예술가곡 중 하나로 민요의 감성을 언어에 담아낸 시인 루드비히 횔티의 사랑의 메시지가 녹아 있는 서정적인 시에 곡을 붙인 ‘소식’이라는 뜻인 작품 Botschaft Op. 47을 노래하였다. 이어 프랑스 작곡가 프랑시스 풀랑(1899~1963)의 가곡 ‘사랑의 길(Les Chemins de l'amour)’을 불렀다. 사랑의 길은 프랑스 극작가 장 아누이(1910~1987)가 1940년 2차 세계대전 중에 발표한 희극 레오카디아(Léocadia)에 담긴 시였다. 희극에 사용될 음악으로 만들어진 노래로 왈츠 리듬과 프랑스의 특성적인 감성이 어우러진 애상적인 음악이다.
이어진 가곡 비가(悲歌-elegy)는 한양대학교 설립자이며 수많은 작곡을 남긴 김연준(1914~2008) 작곡가의 1973년 발표된 가곡 7집에 수록된 곡이다. 이화여대 영문과를 졸업하고 한양대학교 영문과 교수를 지낸 여류 시인 청련(靑蓮) 신동춘(1931~) 시인의 시에 곡을 붙인 것이다. 그러나 가사가 1절의 시만 존재하여 후학들의 주선으로 2절 가사가 홍은택 시인에 의하여 작시 되었다. 새로운 가사의 초연이 소프라노 이효숙 독창회에서 이루어진 것이다.
이어진 또 한 곡의 특별한 노래가 있었다. 민족의 성웅 이순신 장군의 시조 ‘한산섬 달 밝은 밤에’였다. 대한민국 정상급 남성 성악가들로 2006년 창단한 보이스 오케스트라인 이 마에스트리(I MAESTRI) 양재무 음악감독과 작곡가 정지원이 작곡한 창작 오페라 ‘이순신 1592’의 대표곡이다.
내년 4월 25일부터 27일까지 국립극장 무대에 오를 것으로 예정된 오페라의 대표곡이며 오페라 서곡으로 올해 5월 예술의 전당 콘서트홀에서 열린 이마에스트리 제19회 정기연주회에서 처음 소개되었던 노래다. 당시 대금을 연주한 신재현 연주자가 이번 공연에서도 연주하였다. 또한, 전경미 바이올리니스트의 탄탄한 기량의 연주가 어우러지면서 동, 서양 악기의 만남에서 빚어내는 울림이 크게 다가왔다.
이어진 공연은 바리톤 김보람과 함께한 2곡의 무대였다. 베르디(1813~1901)의 오페라 ‘라 트라비아타(La traviata)’의 아리아 ‘이 말을 전해 주세요(Dite alla giovine)’와 표트르 차이콥스키(1840~1893)가 러시아 문학가 알렉산드르 푸시킨(1799~1837)의 단편 소설을 바탕으로 1890년 작곡한 오페라 ‘스페이드의 여왕(The Queen of Spades)’의 아리아 ‘나는 당신을 사랑합니다(Ya vas lyublyu)’였다.
두 곡의 노래에서 바리톤 김보람의 탄탄한 기량의 깊은 음색이 이효숙 소프라노와 하모니를 이루면서 감정을 담은 대화의 긴장감을 섬세한 표현으로 그려냈다.

공연 피날레 곡은 체코의 전통적인 음악을 클래식 음악과 융합하여 자신의 음악 세계를 열었던 체코의 작곡가 안토닌 드보르작(1841~1904)의 오페라 달의 노래(Rusalka)에 나오는 아리아 ‘달에게 부르는 노래(Song to the Moon)’였다. 동화 작가 한스 안데르센의 대표작 ‘인어 공주’ 이야기와 비슷한 체코의 전래동화에 등장하는 물의 요정 루살카가 인간 왕자와 사랑에 빠지는 이야기를 그려낸 작품 아리아로 첼리스트 최수원의 서정적이며 애절한 연주가 어우러졌다.
다양한 음악을 품은 소프라노 이효숙 독창회의 감동적인 공연에 뜨거운 환성과 박수로 등장한 앙코르곡은 우리의 가곡 ‘그네’와 아일랜드 그룹 시크릿 가든이 2002년 발표한 희망적인 메시지를 품은 노래 유 레이즈 미 업(You Raise Me Up)으로 관중들이 함께 부르며 자선 음악회의 소중한 정신을 일깨웠다.
독창회 공연 반주를 맡는 피아니스트 박성희는 이경미는 이화여자대학교 피아노과를 졸업하고 이탈리아와 독일에서 공부한 실력파로 이효숙 성악가와 함께 대화를 나누듯 연주하는 인상적인 기량을 선보였다. 특히 다양한 음악에 담긴 감정과 서사를 함께 전달하는 해석자와 같은 역할의 반주가 뛰어났다.
또한, 공연의 사회와 해설을 맡은 장일범 음악평론가의 격조 있는 해설과 진행이 돋보였다. 평화방송(CPBC) FM에서 ‘장일범의 유쾌한 클래식’ 진행을 맡고 있는 경륜에서 다양한 음악이 귀에 쏙 들어왔다. artwww@naver.com

At the invitation of Dr. Jang Yoon-seon, the head of Biostar, a research company specializing in autologous stem cells, I attended a solo recital by soprano Lee Hyo-sook held at Sejong Chamber Hall in Sejong Center for the Performing Arts. Lee Hyo-sook has held each solo recital as a charity concert to help children in Nepal who suffered earthquake damage, to help Doctors Without Borders, and to build a Lou Gehrig's disease treatment center.
The 450-seat concert hall was filled with people who support the musician's dedicated spirit for the underprivileged. As always, I feel this when I attend a Sejong Chamber Hall concert, but it is a chamber music concert hall optimized for acoustic sound where the unique sounds of instruments come alive.
The opening song of the concert was ‘A cycle of life’, a song cycle by British composer Randon Ronald (1873-1938) that depicts the beginning and end of love in four seasons and contrasts it with the journey of life. Out of the five songs, the prelude, ‘Down in the Forest-Spring’ depicting spring, and ‘Love I have won you-Summer’ depicting summer were sung as one flow.
The next song was performed by classical guitarist Bae Jang-heum, who played the first movement ‘simplícĭtas’ from the Baden Jazz Suite by Czech-born guitarist, composer, and music educator Izi Irmal (1925-2019).
The diversity of the concert, which consisted of a special program, was deeply touching. Czech guitarist, composer, and music educator Izi Irmal was a musician who devoted his life to the classical guitar. He composed many pieces based on the traditions of Brazilian and South American music, and on the rhythms of samba, rumba, and bossa nova.
His Baden Jazz Suite is a piece dedicated to the Brazilian bossa nova master and guitarist Baden Powell (1937-2000). It consists of the first movement, ‘SIMPLICITAS’, the second movement, ‘BERCEUSE’, and the third movement, ‘RONDO A LA SAMBA’, which were performed by guitarist Bae Jang-heum at the concert.
‘Izzy Irmal’ is a musician with a deep understanding of jazz music, and the improvisation contained in his performances is recognized worldwide.
The next music for the solo recital of soprano Lee Hyo-sook, which embraces various types of music, was the Spanish classical song ‘Dos cantares populares’ by Spanish composer Fernando Obradors (1897-1945) and the traditional dance song ‘El Vito’. The refined performance of guitarist Bae Jang-heum and the delicate hand castanets played by pianist Park Sung-hee, who accompanied the solo recital, further enriched the mood of the deepening autumn night.
In the latter half of the performance, she sang Botschaft Op. 47, one of Johannes Brahms’ (1833-1897) art songs, which is a lyrical poem with a message of love by poet Ludwig Hölty that captures the sentimentality of folk songs in language, and which means ‘news’. Next, he sang the song “Les Chemins de l'amour” by French composer Francis Poulenc (1899-1963). “Les Chemins de l'amour” was a poem included in the comedy Léocadia, which French playwright Jean Anouilh (1910-1987) published during World War II in 1940. Another special song followed. It was the sijo poem of the national hero Admiral Yi Sun-sin, ‘Hansan Island, on a bright moonlit night.’ It is the representative song of the creative opera ‘Yi Sun-sin 1592’ composed by Yang Jae-moo, the music director of I MAESTRI, a voice orchestra founded in 2006 with top male vocalists in Korea, and composer Jeong Ji-won.
It is the representative song of the opera scheduled to be performed on the National Theater stage from April 25 to 27 next year, and it was first introduced as an opera overture at the 19th regular concert of I MAESTRI held at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall in May this year. The aria, which depicts the story of Rusalka, a water nymph from a Czech folktale similar to the famous story ‘The Little Mermaid’ by fairy tale writer Hans Andersen, falling in love with a human prince, was combined with the lyrical and sorrowful performance of cellist Choi Su-won.
The encore songs, which were met with warm cheers and applause after the moving performance of soprano Lee Hyo-sook’s solo concert featuring various music, were our song ‘Swing’ and the hopeful song ‘You Raise Me Up’ released by Irish group Secret Garden in 2002, which the audience sang together, awakening the precious spirit of the charity concert.
Pianist Park Sung-hee, who will be the accompaniment for the solo concert, is a talented person who graduated from Ewha Womans University’s piano department and studied in Italy and Germany. She showed off her impressive skills by playing along with vocalist Lee Hyo-sook as if having a conversation.
