나는 가을이면 늘 노벨과학상(물리, 화학, 생리의학) 수상자들의 업적을 자세히 들여다보곤 하는데, 올해는 알파고로 유명한 허사비스가 받았다 하여 그의 단백질 연구 논문 초록을 보았다.
흔히 알파고 개발자로 알려진 허사비스는 인지신경학 박사다. 물론 대학에서는 컴퓨터공학을 전공했다.
허사비스는 '생각을 생각하는 사람'이다.
1976년생, 영국인으로서 그는 당시 최첨단 과학기술에 가까이 다가가 있었다.
그에 비하면 나는 전쟁이 끝난 폐허에서 자라며 미국인들이 보내주는 원조물자로 먹고, 입는 생활을 하면서 자랐으니 비교 자체가 안된다. 점심은 굶고, 저녁도 자주 건너뛰면서 어린 시절을 보냈으니 그들을 따라갈 수가 없다.
세계의 천재들은 AI로 벼라별 것을 다 해내고 있는데, 우리 사회에서는 관상, 무당, 역술 따위가 판을 치고, 거짓과 위선과 저주가 날마다 시끄럽다.
나는 내 나이도 잊고 허사비사의 알파고와 겨루는 넷플렉스 다큐를 찍어볼까도 생각했었다. 지금은 다른 쪽으로 생각하느라 그 생각을 접었는데, 내가 안해도 허사비사는 '딥마인드'로 반드시 해낼 것이라고 본다.
그는 "AI가 10년 안에 모든 질병을 치료할 수 있다"고 한다.
요즘 일론 머스크와 데미스 허사비스 같은 천재들을 보는 재미로 산다.
망아지는 제주로 보내고 사람은 서울로 보내라는 속담이 있는데, 오늘날 사람은 미국 대학이나 영국 대학으로 보내는 게 맞다. 서울 보내면 도리어 총기를 잃고 여의도 낭인이 되기 십상이다.
하기야 한국인으로 돌아온 그쪽 출신자들이 워낙 찌질한 짓만 골라 해서 사람들이 오해할 수 있는데, 그건 하찮은 아이들 몇몇이 그러는 것이고 그쪽 출신들이 대개 우리 세상을 이끌어간다.
제사 지내고 굿하고 점보고 부적들고 다녀서는 이 놀라운 시대를 살아갈 수가 없다. 과학기술문명이 태풍처럼 밀려들던 구한말에 그런 것에는 아랑곳하지 않고 저희끼리 치고박고 싸우다 쫄딱 망해 일제 속국민이 된 것들이 AI가 밀려오는 이 시대에 아직도 이러고 있다. 아래 사진은 수퍼컴. 수퍼컴 놓을 때도 돼지머리 놓고 절할 걸?
