브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 관세 협상에서 통상과 안보를 분리하겠다는 입장을 밝혔다. 당초 트럼프 행정부는 상호관세 협상에서 방위비 분담금 문제 등 안보까지 엮어왔다.
AP통신 보도에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 24일(현지 시간) 노르웨이 총리와의 회담 자리에서 "우리는 그들(타국)의 군을 보살펴 왔지만 군 문제는 우리가 말할 다른 주제"라며 "우리는 이를(안보) 어떤 합의에도 넣지 않을 것"이라고 밝혔다.
트럼프 대통령은 그러나 기존의 생각 자체를 바꾸지는 않았다. 그는 "우리가 사실상 그들의 군을 돌봐주고도 무역 문제에서 공정한 대우를 받지 못했다"면서 "그러나 나는 어떤 국가도 비난하지 않는다. 나는 그런 합의가 이뤄질 당시 대통령이었던 이들을 비난하는 것"이라고 전임 바이든 대통령을 향한 비난이라고 언급했다.
트럼프 대통령이 '한국은 방위비 분담금을 현재보다 10배는 더 내야한다'는 취지의 말을 수차례 해왔던 것에 비춰보면, 이번 발언은 현재 협상을 진행하고 있는 한국의 입장에선 반가운 일이다.
실제로 최상목 경제부총리는 이날 한미 재무·통상 2+2 회의에서 "방위비 언급은 전혀 없었다"라고 밝히기도 했다.
다만 트럼프 대통령의 발언이 그간 일관되지 않은 적도 많았다는 점을 고려하면, 여전히 방위비 문제가 통상 협의 테이블에 오를 가능성은 배제할 수 없다.
