중국 광서사범대학 미술학원 교수이며 회화과 부주임으로 재직 중인 임신상(林莘翔) 작가는 중국 남방 산수화의 전통을 계승하고 그 안에 현대적 감성과 조화의 미학을 추구하는 뛰어난 작가로 주목받고 있다. 계림에서 태어나 중국미술학원을 졸업한 그는 수십 년에 걸쳐 산수화의 형식 실험과 이론적 탐구를 병행하는 공필(工筆)의 정밀함과 사의(寫意)의 자유로움을 아우르는 미학적 확장을 추구하고 있는 작가다.
작가는 이번 전시에서 산수화의 현대적 감성의 울림을 폭넓게 제시하고 있다. 작가의 그림은 자연과 도시, 사물과 시간, 감성과 지혜의 아우름을 깊숙하게 담아낸 심상의 회화이다.

작가의 푸른 물가가 고요하다는 뜻의 작품 벽수도변정(碧水渡邊靜)은 마음을 비치는 맑은 거울과 같은 고요한 강가의 고요 속에 내면의 평온과 성찰의 사유를 의미한 것이다.
이 작품은 상대적으로 잔잔하고 섬세한 산수의 정수를 보여준다. 화면에는 맑은 강물의 흐름이 차분히 이어지고 강변에 우거진 숲 너머로 희미하게 가옥이 드러나며 온 세상이 은은한 침묵 속에 잠겨 있다.
작가는 절제된 수묵 기법을 통해 빛과 바람과 그리고 물과 나뭇잎의 흔들림까지 섬세하게 담아내고 있다. 먹의 번짐과 농담 차이를 통해 화면의 극적인 깊이와 입체감을 그린 무언의 정적 속에 펼쳐진 강변의 풍경을 통하여 바쁜 삶에서 잠시 멈추어 마음을 가라앉히는 사유의 여백과 같은 작품을 추구한 것이다. 이는 작가가 추구해 온 조화의 미학이 응축된 시적 회화의 면면이다.

이어지는 작가의 작품 고항추운(古巷秋韻)은 고즈넉한 옛 골목에 깃든 가을의 운치와 감성을 그려낸 작품이다. 세로형 구도 속에 펼쳐진 이 작품은 계림의 옛 골목을 배경으로 일상과 계절의 감성을 심도 있게 묘사한 현대적 감성의 작품이다. 붓으로 정밀하게 묘사된 기와지붕과 벽돌집 사이로 난 골목길과 화면 하단에 펼쳐진 향수가 깃든 공간은 생활의 흔적이며 기억의 지형이다.

In this exhibition, the artist presents a wide range of contemporary sensibilities of landscape painting. The artist’s paintings are paintings of the imagination that deeply capture the harmony of nature and the city, objects and time, emotions and wisdom.
The work Tonggangdalhae (通江達海), which depicts the landscape of the times, clearly shows the profound understanding of civilization and structure contained in the tip of the brush. The industrial civilization landscape spread out on the canvas shows the cross-section of the modern landscape that Im Sin-sang pursues.
