홍해와 아라비아해 그리고 페르시아만에 둘러싸인 아라비아반도의 대부분을 차지하는 나라 사우디아라비아는 이슬람교의 발상지이며 성지인 메카와 메디나를 품고 있다. 세계 최대 석유 매장 부국인 사우디아라비아는 점진적인 개방 정책으로 변화의 물결이 출렁이는 중동의 핵심 국가이다.
사우디아라비아 제2의 도시 젯다와 수도 리야드에서 한국의 다양한 전통문화를 체험하는 한국문화축제와 전통 판소리 공연에 함께 참여하는 뜻깊은 무대가 열렸다.
지난 5월 9일 사우디 젯다 한국국제학교(교장 한상준)와 주젯다한국총영사관(우홍구 총영사)이 협력하여 개최한 ‘2025 한국문화축제’이다. ‘한국을 즐기자(Enjoy Korea)’라는 주제로 올해 2회째 열린 문화 축제는 많은 사우디아라비아 현지 주민들이 참여하여 성황을 이루었다. 다양한 전통 게임과 서예와 전통 한복 체험을 통하여 한국의 문화를 깊숙하게 이해하는 현장이었다.
축제 현장을 가득 메운 관중들의 뜨거운 반응이 폭발한 공연이 있었다. 한국예술종합학교 교수이며 세계 판소리협회를 이끄는 채수정 국악인의 판소리 공연이었다.

현지 언론 아랍 뉴스(Arab News)는 젯다 한국국제학교에서 열린 ‘2025 한국문화축제’에 대하여 ‘한국 문화를 기념하는 젯다 축제’라는 제목으로 상세하게 보도하였다. 사우디 최초의 영어 일간지 아랍 뉴스는 사우디아라비아 왕세자 겸 현 총리인 최고 권력자 무함마드 빈 살만 알사우드의 동생인 투르키 빈 살만 알 사우드 왕자가 소유한 언론사로 사우디 정부의 심층적 정보에 기반한 보도로 막강한 영향력을 가지고 있는 매체이다.
다음 날 5월 10일 사우디아라비아 수도 리야드에 소재한 사우디 최초의 사립대학 프린스 술탄대학 대강당에서는 한국의 명창과 리야드 세종학당 합창단이 함께 부르는 전통 소리 꽃 타령과 강강술래가 울려 퍼졌다. 리야드 세종학당 합창단 학생들이 줌(Zoom)을 통하여 세계 판소리협회 회원인 심윤아, 전하영 강사의 온라인 지도로 공부한 판소리 공연이었다.
공연에서 채수정 교수는 흥부가 박 타는 대목에 이어 제자 김현주 김민결과 사랑가와 동백타령, 진도아리랑을 불러 전통 판소리의 정수를 알렸다. 이어 정효정 선생이 지도하는 리야드 세종학당 합창단과 함께 부른 ‘꽃 타령’과 ‘강강술래’는 국경이 없는 소통과 교류의 감동적인 여운을 전하며 현지 관객의 뜨거운 환호를 받았다.

국경이 없는 울림의 근원을 헤아리면 한국과 사우디아라비아 전통 음악이 품은 음성 중심의 동질성을 살피게 된다. 우리의 전통 판소리와 사우디 전통 음악이 악기보다는 음성의 표현력과 기교를 중심으로 감정을 전달하고 메시지를 전달하는 점이 맞닿아 있다.
이를 전문적으로 해체하면 구연 적인 우리 판소리의 극적 서사와 사우디 전통 음악이 가지고 있는 시적 낭송의 서사성과 연주의 즉흥성이 문자 이전의 구술 문학에 뿌리를 두어 유구한 역사로 계승된 사실을 살피게 된다.
유네스코 무형문화유산으로 등재된 사우디아라비아의 대표적인 전통 민속무 검무는 오랜 역사의 전사 춤과 북이 중심인 음악과 낭송이 어우러진 춤이다. 나아가 민속무 삼리(Samri)는 다프 북 리듬에 맞추어 즉흥적인 시를 노래하며 신명의 춤을 춘다. 또한, 악기 없이 목소리로만 부르는 이슬람 성가 양식의 음악 나쉬드(nasheed)의 아름다운 울림이 존재한다.
덧붙여 주요한 축제에 등장하는 전통 음악에서 발전한 현대 민요 형태의 대중 음악 샤일라트(Shilat)는 구전의 전통과 반복적인 후렴구가 어우러진 구술 음악으로 공동체의 감정을 표현하는 집단 음악의 특성이 있다.

이처럼 한국과 사우디아라비아의 전통 음악은 각기 다른 시간과 공간에서 태어났지만, 목소리로 삶을 노래하며 역사를 이어왔다는 점에서 깊은 동질성을 품고 있다. 전통 판소리 구연의 서사성과 사우디 전통 음악의 시적 낭송은 문자 이전의 역사를 품어 안고 깊은 공명을 전하고 있다.
오랜 시간 판소리의 전통을 지켜온 채수정 소리꾼은 이번 사우디아라비아 무대에서 국경과 언어를 넘어선 소리의 다리를 놓았다. 그의 소리는 시대와 문화를 잇는 진심이 머문 울림이었다. 세계를 향해 역사의 가슴 깊은 곳에서 길어 올린 소리를 전하는 의식에 대한 응원은 우리의 몫이다. artwww@naver.com
