[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자]지난 5월 28일 새벽 0시 27분경, 해운대구 좌동의 한 도로에서 음주운전 차량을 발견한 시민들의 빠른 판단과 용기 있는 행동이 경찰의 현장 검거로 이어졌다.
당시 친구 사이인 B씨와 C씨(이상 20대, 남)는 함께 있던 중 비틀거리며 주행하는 차량을 목격하고 즉시 음주운전이 의심된다며 경찰에 신고했다. 이후 두 사람은 각자 오토바이를 타고 문제의 차량을 추격하기 시작했다.
신고를 받고 출동한 경찰은 송정터널 앞 도로에서 해당 차량을 발견하고 수차례 정차를 지시했다. 그러나 운전자는 이를 무시하고 중앙선을 넘나들며 신호를 위반하고 과속하는 등 난폭운전을 벌이며 도주했다.
경찰은 B씨와 함께 약 4km를 추격했지만, 도중에 차량을 놓치게 된다. 그러나 또 다른 시민 C씨가 기지를 발휘해 차량의 도주 경로를 예상, 미리 기장군의 한 상가 주차장으로 이동했고, 그곳에서 차량을 발견했다.
곧바로 C씨는 경찰에 위치를 알렸고, 현장에 도착한 경찰은 만취 상태의 운전자 A씨(40대, 남)를 도로교통법 위반 혐의(음주운전 및 난폭운전)로 현행범 체포했다. 체포 시각은 오전 0시 53분경이었다.
경찰 관계자는 “시민의 신속한 신고와 용감한 협조가 큰 도움이 되었다”며 감사의 뜻을 전했다. 시민과 경찰의 협력이 만들어낸 음주운전자 검거 사례는 지역사회에 큰 귀감이 되고 있다.

In the early hours of May 28, a quick-thinking and courageous act by two citizens in Haeundae-gu, Busan, led to the arrest of a drunk driver attempting to flee from police.
At approximately 12:27 a.m., two friends in their 20s, referred to as B and C, spotted a vehicle swerving dangerously along a road in Jwadong. Suspecting drunk driving, they immediately reported the vehicle to the police.
Without hesitation, they each mounted their motorcycles and began to follow the car. Responding to the call, officers from the Haeundae Police Station, located the suspect vehicle near the entrance of Songjeong Tunnel.
Despite repeated orders to stop, the driver ignored the commands and fled, committing multiple traffic violations, including crossing the center line, running red lights, and speeding.
The police, with the help of B, pursued the suspect vehicle for about 4 kilometers before losing visual contact. However, C, having anticipated the escape route, had already moved ahead and located the car parked in a commercial parking lot in Gijang County.
Upon receiving C’s update, officers swiftly arrived at the scene and arrested the driver, identified as A, a man in his 40s, at 12:53 a.m.
He was taken into custody on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act, including driving under the influence (above license cancellation level) and reckless driving.
A police representative expressed gratitude, saying, “This arrest would not have been possible without the prompt report and courageous cooperation of these citizens.”
