서울돈화문국악당은 오는 6월 18일, 전통예술의 확장성과 동시대적 감각을 조명하는 특별한 무대를 선보인다. ‘넥스트 국악(NEXT GUGAK) | Far, Wide, Many’는 서울돈화문국악당과 김이끼 PD 프로덕션이 공동으로 기획한 쇼케이스 형식의 공연으로 전통예술이 오늘날 세계 속에서 어떻게 존재하고 발화될 수 있는지를 깊이 있게 탐색한다.
‘NEXT GUGAK’은 ‘더 멀리, 더 넓게, 더 다양하게’라는 지향 아래, 전통의 토대 위에서 동시대 예술가들과 관객이 새로운 관계를 맺는 장이다. 이번 무대는 전통음악의 현대적 재구성을 통해 국제적 확장을 모색해 온 노은실과 달음(Dal:um)의 공연으로 채워진다.
첫 무대는 ‘목소리 예술’의 개념을 소리와 몸, 오브제로 확장해 온 아티스트 노은실의 사운드 퍼포먼스다. 그는 판소리의 연극성과 오브제를 결합한 무대를 국내외에서 꾸준히 선보이며 소리꾼이자 보컬리스트로서 전통과 실험, 즉흥과 구조 사이의 경계를 허무는 작업을 지속해 왔다. 한국예술종합학교에서 판소리를 전공한 후, 체코의 국립예술학교 DAMU Alternative Theatre & Puppet에서 유학하며 몸과 공간, 시각적 조형성을 중심으로 한 실험적 연극 교육을 체화했다. 이러한 경험은 그만의 감각과 시야를 확장하는 중요한 전환점이 되었다.
이어 무대에 오르는 달음은 가야금(하수연)과 거문고(황혜영)로 구성된 여성 듀오로 2018년 결성 이후 전통 현악기의 실험적 음악으로 독창적인 음악 세계를 구축해 왔다. ‘달음’은 ‘어떤 흐름의 여세를 몰아 계속해 나간다’라는 뜻처럼, 두 전통 현악기의 결을 유려하게 엮어내며 새로운 감각의 조화를 창출한다.
가야금 연주자 하수연은 한국예술종합학교 출신으로 서울시 청소년국악단 수석을 역임했으며, 거문고 연주자 황혜영은 국립국악고등학교와 이화여자대학교를 졸업하고 같은 악단의 수석 연주자로 활동해 왔다. 이들은 2021년 독일의 세계음악 레이블 Glitterbeat Records를 통해 첫 정규 앨범 ‘공통과 차이(Similar & Different)’를 발매하며 본격적으로 국제 무대에 진출했다.
해당 앨범은 세계 음악 전문지 송라인즈(Songlines)의 2022 아시아ㆍ태평양 부문 후보에 오르며 주목을 받았다. 이어 영국 사우스뱅크 센터를 시작으로 미국 SXSW, WOMEX 등 세계 유수의 음악 축제에 초청되어 활발한 활동을 이어갔다. 특히 SXSW에서는 여성 아티스트 중심 프로그램 EqualizeHer 쇼케이스에서 잇달아 무대에 올라, 한국 전통 현악의 섬세하면서도 강인한 울림을 세계에 선보였다. 이후 이들은 유럽, 북미, 아시아의 70여 개 도시에서 공연하며 국제적 입지를 공고히 했다.

On June 18, Seoul Donhwamun Traditional Theater presents a unique showcase that explores the expansion and contemporaneity of Korean traditional performing arts. Titled NEXT GUGAK | Far, Wide, Many, this special program—jointly curated by Seoul Donhwamun Traditional Theater and producer PD Kim Ikki—examines how traditional Korean music can speak and resonate on the global stage today.
Guided by the ethos “Farther, Wider, and More Diverse,” NEXT GUGAK aims to forge new relationships between traditional roots and contemporary expressions, between artists and audiences. The program features performances by Noh Eunsil and Dal:um, two artists who are expanding the boundaries of traditional music through modern reinterpretation and global outreach.
The first stage belongs to Noh Eunsil, an artist who has reimagined the concept of “vocal art” through sound performance using voice, body, and object. Blending the theatricality of pansori with visual elements and scenographic experimentation, Noh has continuously challenged the borders between tradition and improvisation, voice and structure. A graduate of the Korea National University of Arts in pansori, she later studied at the renowned DAMU Alternative Theatre & Puppet Department in the Czech Republic, where she immersed herself in experimental theater based on corporeality, space, and object. This experience became a pivotal point in broadening her aesthetic horizon.
Following Noh’s performance is Dal:um, a female duo formed by Ha Suyeon (gayageum) and Hwang Hyeyoung (geomungo). Since their formation in 2018, the two have explored the physicality and sonic potential of traditional Korean string instruments to craft a distinctive sound world. True to their name—Dal:um, meaning “to carry on the momentum of a flow”—their music elegantly intertwines the timbral differences of the two instruments into a cohesive and innovative harmony.
Ha Suyeon, a graduate of Korea National University of Arts, previously served as principal of the Seoul Youth Gugak Orchestra. Hwang Hyeyoung, a graduate of the National Gugak High School and Ewha Womans University, also served as principal of the same orchestra. In 2021, they released their debut album Similar & Different through the global world music label Glitterbeat Records, making their first international mark.
The album was nominated for the 2022 Songlines Music Awards in the Asia & Pacific category, earning critical attention. Their subsequent international appearances included stages at the Southbank Centre in London, SXSW, and WOMEX, among others. At SXSW, they were invited to perform in the EqualizeHer Showcase, appearing on back-to-back stages including the Lustre Pearl and St. David’s Episcopal Church—presenting a subtle yet commanding resonance of Korean traditional strings. Since then, they have performed in more than 70 cities across Europe, North America, and Asia, establishing a firm international presence.
In 2024, Glitterbeat released their second full-length album, Coexistence. This work articulates a delicate and persuasive musical message, wherein the gayageum and geomungo—different in structure and technique—intersect and coexist. Dal:um’s music goes beyond a mere continuation of tradition; it is an aesthetic declaration that proposes a new sensory order shared between today’s audiences and the global music community. It asks how divergent worlds might exist together in harmony.
The reverberations created by their twin strings—within a quiet tension and refined dynamism—emerge as one of the most nuanced and convincing dialogues between Korean traditional music and the world.
