도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 17일(현지시간) "이란 핵 문제의 진정한 종식을 원하며 이란에 핵무기 완전 포기를 요구할 방침"이라고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터통신'에 따르면 이날 트럼프 대통령은 캐나다 G7(주요 7개국) 정상회의 도중 귀국길에 오르며 미 대통령 전용기 '에어포스원'에서 CBS 기자와 만나 이같이 말했다.
또 트럼프 대통령은 이란이 핵 포기를 하지 않을 시 이스라엘이 공격 고삐를 늦추지 않을 것으로 예상 후 "앞으로 이틀 안에 알게 될 것"이라며 "지금까지 아무도 속도를 늦추지 않았다"고 말했다.
그러면서 '스티브 위트코프 중동 특사·JD 밴스 부통령을 이란에 보낼 가능성' 관련해선 "그럴 수도 있다"며 "돌아가서 상황을 보겠다"고 답한 것으로 전해졌다.
앞서 트럼프 대통령은 귀국 이유 관련해 자신의 트루스소셜에 올린 글에서 "(이스라엘-이란 간) 휴전과 관계없다"며 "그것보다 훨씬 큰 게 있다"고 밝힌 바 있다.
그러면서 "에마뉘엘 마크롱 프랑스 대통령은 내가 이스라엘과 이란 간 휴전 논의를 위해 G7 정상회의를 떠나 DC로 돌아간다는 잘못된 언급을 했다"며 "그는 내가 왜 워싱턴으로 돌아가는지 아무것도 모른다"고 했다.
전날 자정(현지시간)께 귀국길에 오른 트럼프 대통령은 백악관에 복귀하는 대로 국가안전보장회의(NSC)를 소집할 것으로 전해졌다.
